Prime Cattle

Another good trade for Prime Cattle this week, despite the easing of the deadweight prices, with a majority prime type entry presented.

Three true premium types on offer topping at 415p/kg (£3,063) for a shapey 738kg Limousin heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne, followed by a 655kg Limousin steer from F G Pryor & Son Ltd of Perranwell Station, Truro at 410p/kg (£2,686) and a 768kg OTM Limousin steer from Mr Eddy at 385p/kg (£2,957).

Good well finished non-FABBL Prime sorts to 388p/kg (£2,500) for a Blue heifer from Mr D L Grigg of Wheal Frances, Truro, followed by another Limousin heifer from Messrs Pryor at 370p/kg and a trio of bullocks tied at 365p/kg being a pair of Blue heifers from Mr Grigg and Blue steer from Mr D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston.

Cull Cows

The cull trade would look just as strong as previous weeks, with ringside demand not faltering.

Top price and runner up both awarded to strong Limousin cows from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston at 316p/kg (£2,512) and 315p/kg (£2,211).

A good Limousin cow from Messrs A R, B & A Hosking of St Martin, Helston looked well sold at 309p/kg (£2,129), a Limousin cow from Mr W P Thomas of Threemilestone, Truro at 294p/kg (£2,190) and a weighty 830kg Limousin cow from Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro at 288p/kg (£2,390).

A single Simmental cow from Mr K Thomas of Wendron, Helston parted away at 279p/kg.

Dairy types to 259p/kg (£2,031) for a Friesian cow from Mr P J Harvey of Coombe, Truro, with a pair of Friesian cows from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro realising 249p/kg and 236p/kg and a Friesian cow from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston at 230p/kg.

Store Cattle

Another exceptional entry and a marked lift in the trade although fewer close to finish types within the entry.

Steers topping at £2245 for a single 23-month-old Simmental on behalf of Messrs A D, D J & N C Freeman of Penhallow, Truro, who sold further Simmentals to £1990 twice, whilst Mr D Rounsevell of Veryan, Truro sold a single 28-month-old Charolais to £2175.

Also at £2175 was Mr A K Stephens of Helston for his 25-month-old pair of Blues, followed by Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne at £2090.

Fine steers from R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell, sold to £2075 for Herefords and £1995 for Limousins, whilst 1½-year-old steers from Jelbert Brothers of Newbridge, Penzance and Messrs J D Bromley & Son of St Gluvias, Penryn achieved £1835 and £1830 respectively.

Younger types to £1690, for a cracking trio of 1-year-old Limousins from Mr R P Morris of Penzance, whilst six 1-year-old Angus steers from Devichoys Farm Ltd of Perranarworthal, Truro, achieved £1670, followed by young Anguses from Mr A W Nicholls of Chacewater, Truro at £1605.

Young Simmental steers to £1590 on behalf of Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed, Penzance and Limousins to £1575 on behalf of Osborne Brothers of St Just, Penzance.

Heifers selling to £2045 on behalf of Mr M D Wearne of Wendron, Helston, followed by Mr D Rounsevell at £1950 and Messrs A D D J & N C Freeman at £1755.

Blue heifers to £1745 on behalf of Messrs J D Bromley & Son, whilst Charolais sold to £1680 on behalf of Mr D R Mitchell of Lower Penponds, Camborne.

Young heifers to £1610 on behalf of Devichoys Farm Ltd followed by young Limousins again from Osborne Brothers at £1500.

Limousin cows and calves over from the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly sold to £2740, £2630 and £2210.

Rearing Calves

A thumping calf trade this week with all shapes and sizes keenly contested and the prices reflective of this.

Top of the day to £715 for a well reared 2-month-old Blue steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston, followed by a shapey young 20 day old Charolais bull from Messrs H L, T & C Lyne of St Clement, Truro at £670 and another 2 m.o Angus steer from Messrs Jenkin at £580.

Young Limousin bulls to £540 for a month-old calf from Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Creed, Truro and a young month-old Blue bull from Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth at £525 and his 2 m.o Angus bull at £520.

A smart month-old Blue bull from the regular consigner Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay sold away at £515 and a Limo bull from Mr I Higman of Par, St Austell looking well sold at £500.

Top Friesian bulls to £360 twice for Mr J Bobin of Ludgvan, Penzance. Messrs R N & D Jenkin also topping the heifers with their 3-month-old Blue at £660, followed again by a smart 15 day old Charolais heifer from Messrs Lyne at £575 and a 2-month-old Blue heifer from Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston at £520.

A 3 m.o Angus heifer to £470 for Messrs Jenkin and a young Blue heifer from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners at £455, with another young Blue from Messrs Colwell at £410. Month-old Limo heifers to £390 and £345 for Mr Higman.

A short run of stirks topped at £500 for an 8-month-old Friesian steer from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston and a Shorthorn bull from Mr P Bottom of Probus, Truro at £485.

Finished Hoggetts

A storming trade from start to finish and all types keenly contested. More needed to meet buyer demand.

Prices peaked at £205 for a cracking pair of 71kg ram hoggs from Mr J Tripconey of St Keverne sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Close behind at £197.50 was a 65.5kg Suffolk hogg from Messrs C P & H L Wearne of Wendron, also sold to J V Richards Ltd.

Setting the premium at 391p/kg were a pen of 38kg hoggs from 2C Farming of Penponds, purchased by L C Farms Ltd of Highampton.

New Season Lambs

A superb single 46kg new season lamb from Messrs C H P Powell & Son of St Ervan sold to £177 purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

The cull ewe trade was on fire this week, with better numbers forward and vendors extremely well rewarded.

Many more could have been sold on the searing trade, which saw an overall ewe average of £155/head despite there being very few continentals amongst them.

Topping at £231 was a medium Texel ewe from Messrs CHP Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge.

Further Texels and Texel X to £216 for Messrs EA & AR Thomas of Sevenmilestone, Truro; £210 for Mrs SA Scholes of North Country, Redruth; £191 again for Messrs Thomas and £183 again for Messrs Powell.

Suffolk to £203, £191 & £180 for Messrs WE & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne.

Charollais X to £198 for Mr M Monk of Kerley, Truro and £170 for Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay. Lleyn to £173 for Mr D Searle of Wendron, Helston.

Suffolk X to £171 twice for Messrs SJ & SM Ward of Grampound Road, Truro and also for Mr TD Retallick of St Columb.

Poll Dorset to £171 three times over for pens from Messrs IC & WP Lobb of St Ewe, St Austell; and £167 again for Messrs Pearce. Welsh Cheviot to £150 for Mr RA Coad of Cubert, Newquay.

Devon & Cornwall Longwool to £148 again for Messrs Gregor. Devon Closewool to £130 and £128 for S Miller of Mylor Bridge, Falmouth.

Rams also a flying trade topping at £199 for a Blue Texel ram from Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston and £180 for a very lean Texel ram again from Messrs Gregor. Sheep (2T) to £161 for a single from Mrs SA Scholes.

Store Sheep

A notable lift in the trade with an overall average of £128, being several pounds up on previous weeks despite the entry containing fewer close to finish types.

A smashing pair of Suffolks from Messrs C P & K L Wearne of Wendron, Helston topped the section at £141.50, followed closely by a super pen from Messrs C R Elliott & Partners of Portloe, Truro at £140.50.

Messrs Elliott & Partners sold further lambs to £136 whilst Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea, Truro sold good types to £139.50, £133 and £131.50.

A strong single in from Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey of St Keverne, Helston achieved £135, whilst a pen from Mrs P Tullett of Truro parted away at £132.50.
