Prime Cattle
Another topping entry of Prime Cattle and the Truro Trade still setting the pace for liveweight cattle in the South West.
Top of the day to 422p/kg (£3,009) for a storming 713kg Limousin steer from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston, with a 670kg Limousin steer from Messrs R G, E J & G A Williams of St Martin, Helston at 412p/kg (£2,760) and their second 710kg Limousin steer at 410p/kg (£2,911) thereafter.
Further top quality cattle from Messrs Bryant at 408p/kg (£2,893), 405p/kg (£2,843) and 402p/kg (£2,476) for an OTM heifer.
A 746kg Limousin heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne away at 398p/kg (£2,929) and another pair of Limousin steers from Messrs Bryant at 392p/kg (£2,893) and 375p/kg (£2,944).
Messrs H A & M J Farming of Penelewey, Truro also well in the mix with their Limousin heifer away at 382p/kg and their Limousin steer at 370p/kg; the latter tied with a good 650kg Simmental heifer from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance at the same money.
Cull Cows
A good entry and stand on trade to report, with a joint top cow price of 294p/kg for a pair of good South Devon cows from Messrs S & C Taffinder of Portscatho, Truro, followed by another joint price of 273p/kg for a Limousin cow from Mr P I Hodge of Manaccan, Helston and another South Devon from Messrs Taffinder.
A Simmental cow from Messrs D R & J C Vincent of Tregavethan, Truro next at 272p/kg, an Angus cow from Mr I M Noy of Carleen, Helston at 267p/kg and a Blue cow from Mr P I Hodge at 266p/kg.
Herefords to 254p/kg for a cow from Mr Noy, with a Limousin cow from Mr W P Thomas of Threemilestone, Truro at 250p/kg thereafter.
Dairy types to 243p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston, followed by a Friesian cow from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston at 236p/kg and another Friesian cow from Messrs Bray close behind at 234p/kg.
A single Limousin cull bull from Mr W P Thomas went under the hammer at 322p/kg.
Store Cattle
Greater numbers on the week and a fast trade from start to finish, topping at £2595 for a superb 2-year-old Limousin steer on behalf of Messrs J & J Sawle & Son of St Agnes.
Cracking 2-year-old South Devon steers from Mr J C Ball of St Merryn, Padstow realised £2455, followed by a pair of 2-year-old Simmental steers from Messrs A D, D J & N C Freeman of Penhallow, Truro at £2350.
Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston sold 22-month-old Limousins to £2260 and £2155, followed by steers from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Truro and R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell to £2060 and £2025 respectively.
Younger steers to £1560 for a trio of 15-month-old Limousins on behalf of Messrs P V & C S Forway of Threemilestone, Truro followed by young steers from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son of Hewas Water, St Austell, seeing Friesian x to £1450, Herefords to £1370 and Shorthorns to £1370 also.
Heifers trading to a top price of £2320 for a single 23-month-old Limousin from Messrs J & J Sawle & Son who sold a slightly younger trio to £1955, whilst a 21-month-old Simmental from Chegwidden Farm, Penzance achieved £1700.
A 1½-year-old Hereford heifer from Messrs R & D P Rule of Mawla, Redruth achieved £1650 followed by Angus heifers at £1605 from Messrs A D, D J & N C Freeman and Blues from Mr M S Chapman of Silverwell, Truro at £1570.
Younger heifers to £1370 on behalf of Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son, followed by Messrs D R & J C Vincent & Son of Tregavethan, Truro at £1300, with Messrs Bennett & Son then selling further young Shorthorns to £1245 and Messrs Forway selling Limousins to £1170.
Cows and calves trading to £2200 on behalf of Mr B Cowell of Helston, who also sold Simmental suckler cows to £2000 and £1960.
Rearing Calves
A good entry of strong calves forward met with keen bidding.
Top of the younger calves to £665 for a classy month-old Blue bull from Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston, followed by a 2 m.o Blue bull from Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Creed, Truro at £625, tied with a 3 m.o Angus steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at the same money.
A 3 m.o Angus bull from Messrs A G Cave & Son of Rame, Penryn parted away at £610, tied again with another same-aged Angus steer from Messrs Jenkin and a pair of 3 m.o Limousin steers from Messrs Colwell at £580.
A 2 m.o Blue steer from Messrs Jenkin selling away at £560 and his same-aged Blue heifers topping the section at £585 twice thereafter.
2 m.o Angus heifers from Messrs Jenkin at £485, 3 m.o Angus heifers from Messrs Cave at £445 twice and a pair of month-old Angus heifers from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro at £430 and £420.
A run of shapey young stirks from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro topped at £895 for a 4 m.o Blue steer, with their same aged Blue heifers at £790 and £660 twice thereafter.
4 m.o Limousin steer stirks from Mr A Giles of Paul, Penzance topping at £845 twice and his Limousin steer at £710.
Finished Hoggetts
A light entry, but storming trade and more hoggs needed to meet buyer demand.
A lift in the trade this week, seeing prices peak at £173 for a grand pen of 66.1kg Texel crosses from Messrs P T R and P E Jones of Crantock, Newquay, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
This was closely followed by a pair of 66.5kg Lleyn hoggs from Mr D and Mrs S Searle of Wendron at £172.50.
Setting the premium to 340p/kg were a trio of handyweights from Mr J T Rowe of Penponds, purchased by L C Farms Ltd of Highampton.
Cull Ewes
A mixed quality entry with fewer continentals but better numbers forward and selling to £177 twice.
First was a cracking pen full of heavy Charollais ewes from Mr G N Nickells of Fourlanes, Redruth and then a single Texel from Mr W L Hollow of Towednack, St Ives.
Suffolk Mules to £160 for Mr M P Bennett of Tregurrian, Newquay and £147.50 for Miss S Trewern of Praze, Camborne.
Further Charollais x to £159 for the best of a big run from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay with another crossbred from the same vendor at £149.
Further Texel and Texel x ewes to £152 again from Miss Trewern and £147 for Mr E J Tuckett of Par.
Dorsets to £138 twice, firstly from Mr A D Brewer of Little Petherick, Wadebridge and secondly from Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn east, Newquay.
Mules to £138 again from Mr Tuckett. A single ram forward being a collared Ryeland from Miss S McMillan of Pool, Redruth selling to £120.
Store Sheep
Very few to report this week and greater numbers needed to meet demand.
Trade topping at £165 for a heavyweight single from Miss S Trewern of Praze, followed by pens from Miss H Bailey of Redruth to £135, £131.50 and £105.
