Prime Cattle
A short but sweet entry of Prime Cattle with a fast trade, especially for the best Premium types on offer.
A stunning 744kg Limousin heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne soared away to a top of 428p/kg and £3,184.
A cracking 716kg Limousin steer from Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell parted away at 412p/kg (£2,950) and an OTM 742kg Limousin steer from Mr Eddy realised 398p/kg (£2,953).
A good Hereford steer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay topped the natives at 378p/kg (£2,570), another Limousin steer from Mr Grigg close behind at 375p/kg (£2,783), a further pair of Hereford steers from Mr Coad at 365p/kg and 358p/kg and an OTM South Devon steer from Mr Eddy at 355p/kg (£2,822).
The liveweight trade continues to hold strong, with no shortage of buying power around the ring.
Cull Cows
Numbers very tight in the cull section, although another strong trade to report.
Top price to an 804kg middle-aged South Devon cow from Mr T G Hawke of Colan, Newquay at 303p/kg (£2,436), a 615kg Hereford cow from Mr K Bottrell of Newbridge, Penzance realised 300p/kg and another South Devon cow from Mr Hawke one bid behind at 299p/kg (£2,156).
Over-age cull cows to 291p/kg twice for both a Limousin from Mr M P Carlyon of St Day, Redruth and a Simmental cow from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb; the latter realising £2,261.
A good Angus cow from Devichoys Farm Ltd of Perranarworthal, Truro parted away at 282p/kg (£2,157), followed by a South Devon cow from Messrs R D & D A Gendall of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston at 280p/kg, with a Limousin cull bull from the same farm at the same pence-per-kilo and £2,523.
Store Cattle
Yet another strong entry selling on a stand on trade which saw steers top at £2390 for a sensational pair of 20-month-old Charolais on behalf of Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston who sold further Charolais to £2125 and £1990 and a Simmental to £2105.
R M Farming Co of Sticker, St Austell sold a 2-year-old South Devon Steer to £2045, followed by Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne who sold four 16-month-old Angus steers to £2000 a piece.
Mr J A Hall of Leedstown, Hayle sold a trio of 19-month-old Blues to £1930, followed by a pair of 2-year-old Herefords from Camels Farm of Veryan, Truro at £1910 which was also achieved by Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro for their 1½-year-old Continental steers.
Best of the younger steers coming from Osborne Bros of St Just, Penzance as their choice 11-month-old Limousin went under the hammer at £1800 with a further Limo thereafter to £1760.
14-month-old Angus steers on behalf of Messrs J R Semmens & Son of St Levan, Penzance to £1690 whilst 1-year-old Charolais from Mr K R Williams of Tehidy, Camborne achieved £1550.
Heifers selling to £2110 for a tremendous 29-month-old Blue on behalf of Camels Farm, followed by sensational 1-yearold Charolais from Mrs B Baxter to £2010 with older Charolais from Mrs Baxter to £2005 thereafter.
Mr S Arthur of Rose, Truro sold 30-month-old Herefords to £1860 whilst a trio of 2-year-old Devons from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston achieved £1730.
Further young heifers to £1645 on behalf of Mr A N Badcock of St Erth, Hayle who sold further lots to £1600 with young Limos in from Mr K R Williams to £1380, Angus heifers to £1375 on behalf of Messrs J R Semmens & Son and 11-month-old Limos from Mr M D Wearne of Wendron, Helston to £1365.
Charolais cows and calves to £1940 on behalf of Mr B Cowell of Wendron, Helston.
Rearing Calves
A flying calf trade from start to finish, with all shapes and sizes selling away strongly to the regular contingent of buyers.
Top of the day for a cracking 2-month-old Blue steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at £780, followed by a 3-month-old Limousin steer from Messrs M & J Rowe of Ashton, Helston at £740 and another 2-month-old Blue steer from Messrs Jenkin at £730.
Messrs Rowe back in the ring again with a pair of 3-month-old Limo steers at £690 and £620 and a pair of sweet month-old Blue bulls from Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth trading at £630 and £605.
2-month-old Limousin bulls from Messrs J R, P M & D W Treleaven of Tenarren, St Austell at £595 and the top pair of young month-old Hereford bulls to £560 and £550 for Messrs A & B Pascoe of North Country, Redruth.
Young month-old Angus bulls from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay at £535 and £530.
Heifer trade just as strong topped at £675 twice for a smart pair of 2-month-old Blues from Messrs Jenkin, a 2-month-old Limousin from Messrs Treleaven at £490 and a month-old Blue from Mr Wilkinson at £465.
Many other quality calves sold between £300 and £500 which are too numerous to mention but a credit to their vendors.
A topping run of stirks looked a fast trade to £930 for a 6-month-old Blue bull from Mr A S Johns of Praze-an-Beeble, Camborne, followed by a cracking run from W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston with 3-month-old Blue steers to £745 thrice, £710 for a 3-month-old Angus steer and a pair of further Blue steers at £685 twice.
Mr P S Best of St Newlyn East, Newquay saw their best 4-month-old Hereford steers to £725 thrice and heifers topped by W P & J Jenkin Ltd at £710 x 4 for their bunch of 4-month-old Blues.
Finished Hoggetts
A good entry and exceptionally high prices for all on offer. A significant lift in the trade.
An overall average of £176/head and four pens over £200. Topping the day were a smart pair of shapely 58kg Charollais crosses from Mr M Monk of Chacewater, Truro, sold to L C Farms Ltd of Highampton.
A superb run of three pens of heavyweights from Messrs P T R & P E Jones of Crantock, Newquay, seeing their top pen achieve £208 and the three pens av. £207.50.
Setting the premium at 399p/kg were light 37.6kg Beltex hoggs from Mr G M Henwood of Praze-an-Beeble, Camborne.
New Season Lamb
A smart run of new season lambs forward this week.
Setting the premium at 415p/kg for 40.8kg handyweight Dorset lambs from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Tywardreath, Par, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
A single 60kg Suffolk lamb topped at £191 for Mr S G Parkin of Whitemoor, St Austell, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
This was followed by the best pick of two pens of smart shapely lambs from Messrs A J Pellowe & Son of Nancekuke at £185, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Cull Ewes
The cull ewe trade was off the clock again this week, with an overall average of £158.
Charollais out in front topping at £210 for the best of a run from Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro. This was followed closely by a Charollais from Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro at £209.50.
Further Charollais to £199 and £172 again from Mr Eyles, and £169 from Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro. Zwartbles ewes to £205 and £181 for Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb.
Texels to £200 for the best of a cracking run from Messrs W H Morgan & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay with more pens to £195, £191, £185 and £183.50. Further Texels to £190 for Mr S Turriff of Tregavethan, Truro, and £180 for Mr M Monk of Chacewater, Truro.
A handful of Suffolks selling to £177 for Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro. Suffolk x mule to £169 again for Mr M Monk. Mules to £169 for Messrs Caerhays Farms of Gorran, St Austell.
Dorset to £165 again for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners and £155 for Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Tywardreath, Par.
Rams to £186 and £175 for Charollais x rams from Messrs Hoskin Partnership of St Austell and £160 for a Zwartbles ram again from Messrs Hooper. Sheep (2T) to £201 for a Zwartbles wether again from Messrs Hooper.
Store Sheep
A light entry of store hoggs forward, selling to £135.50 for Messrs Caerhays Farms of Gorran, St Austell.
A single Zwartbles from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb to £134.
