Prime Cattle

A stunning entry selling to a strong trade across the board, with very good numbers and quality forward.

Top pence-per-kilo to 398p/kg for a good 529kg Blue heifer from Mr N J Bennetts of Zelah, Truro, with a weighty 705kg Limousin steer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay close behind at 392p/kg (£2,764).

A trio of brilliant bullocks tied next at 390p/kg; being a 627kg Limousin steer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt at £2,445, a 676kg Limousin steer from the same stable at £2,636 and a 637kg Limousin heifer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at £2,484.

Another trio of topping Limousin steers from both Mr W J P Julian and Mrs J Julian featured yet again at 380p/kg (£2,614), 379p/kg (£2,482) and 378p/kg (£2,517).

Other good heifers included an Angus from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne at 366p/kg, a 611kg Hereford from Mr S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro at 352p/kg and a 691kg Blue from Mr Coad at 350p/kg (£2,419).

Top pounds-per-head for a weighty 857kg Blue steer from Mr Coad, for the second week in a row, at 338p/kg and a resultant £2,897.

Cull Cows

An entry of mixed quality to report, with all animals forward looking well-sold on a settled trade and a larger than anticipated number seen.

Top honours away to a high quality 633kg Limousin from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 335p/kg (£2,121), followed by cow-aged Blue steer from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro at 319p/kg and the best young Friesian heifer from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro next at 310p/kg.

A good South Devon cow from Messrs J G Bosustow & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston parted away at 300p/kg, with their second same-breed cow at 292p/kg and another cow-aged Blue steer from Messrs Dustow one bid behind at 291p/kg.

A good weighty 863kg South Devon cow from Mr R Sadler of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth sold very well at 286p/kg (£2,468) and yet another South Devon cow, this time from Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, Newquay at 275p/kg.

Further dairy types to 272p/kg (£2,127) for a Friesian from Mr Heller and another from the same farm at 218p/kg. Top pounds-per-head of a strong £2,810 for a weighty 1,037kg South Devon cow from Mr Sadler.

Store Cattle

A very light entry as is typical for the week of Royal Cornwall Show.

Predominantly younger cattle in, topping at £1,770 for a trio of 14mo Limousins from Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro.

Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro sold a single 1yo Limousin to £1,475 and another at £1,395, whilst a trio of 11mo South Devons from Messrs D R & J C Vincent & Son of Tregavethan, Truro realised £1,315, with a further single to £1,180, whilst Mr G Symons of Truro sold 1yo South Devons to £1,305 and £1,290.

Mr K Abrahams of Redruth sold a single 1yo South Devon to £1,080, whilst four South Devons, being 14mo from Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston realised £950.

Heifers selling to a top price of £1,410 for 14mo Limousins on behalf of Messrs R G & J M Prowse, with South Devons then from Mr G Symons at £1,165, Messrs A M & V R Pascoe at £1,025 and Messrs D R & J C Vincent & Son at £1,000. In-calf cows to £1,640 and £1,530 for Herefords from Morcom Partnership of Truro.

Rearing Calves

A lighter entry of calves, once again selling on a strong trade.

Only three young stirks on offer seeing a 5 month old Limousin x steer selling for £710 for Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen, who also sold an Aberdeen Angus x steer for £435 and a younger 3 month old Limousin x heifer for £505.

The young calves saw a top of £620 for a Limousin x bull sold by Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey from St Keverne who also went on to top the heifer section with a Limousin x heifer at £525.

British Blue x bulls sold to £540 for Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East who sold further British Blue x bulls for £515, £490 and £440 and a British Blue x heifer at £385. Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin sold a Simmental x bull for £515 and their Limousin x heifers made £400 and £355.

Further Simmental x bulls to £500 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston who also sold a Simmental x heifer for £410 and the best of the Devon x bulls to £380 for Ms E Pascoe from Helston and Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah sold their best Limousin x heifer for £415.

Prime Hoggs

A small entry of hoggs, selling to £160 for a pen of enormous 81.6kg hoggs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, sold to Lloyd Cleave of Highampton, Devon.

Prime Lambs

A good entry and much improved trade across the board.

Topping at £169 (356p) for 47kg lambs from Mr D J Tremain of Bridge, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Setting the premium to 369p/kg for handyweight Dorset lambs from Messrs W & R Taffinder.

Cull Ewes

A lively trade again in advance of the Royal Cornwall Show at the weekend.

A superb pen full of big Charollais x from Mr Tom Tremain of St Columb topped the Market at £209 apiece. Zwartbles and Zwartbles x to £190 and £174 from Messrs J G Bosustow & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston.

Suffolk x to £181 and £166 from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay. Dorsets to £179 for Messrs W & R Taffinder of Ruan High Lanes, Truro and £164.50 from Mr D J Lobb of St Austell.

Texel x to £178 again from Messrs Jones; £170 from Mr A S P Wright of Truro; £165 again for Messrs Taffinder; and £164 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro. Suffolks to £170 again from Messrs Bosustow. Suffolk x Mule to £156 from Messrs T F & D J Crapp of Helston.

A handful of Rams, to £133 for a medium crossbred wether from Ms J Austin of Trewallard, Penzance; and a handful of Sheep (2T), to £85 for Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East, Newquay.

Store Sheep

Plenty of variety on offer, selling to £121 for new season store lamb on behalf of Mr R S Dawe of Grampound, Truro followed by five store hoggs from Miss J Austin of Pendeen, Penzance at £108.

Couples selling to £192 for singles on behalf of Miss E Pascoe of Helston, with doubles topping at £305 for the same vendor, whilst a consignment of full mouth breeding mules from Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay topped at £147.
