Prime Cattle
A very different entry to last week, with less top-end premium sorts entered, but a similar trade witnessed for those on offer.
Top of 404p/kg for a quality OTM Limousin heifer from Mr H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne, a weighty 788kg OTM Hereford steer at 385p/kg (£3,034), 380p/kg (£2,797) for an OTM Limousin heifer and 375p/kg for an OTM South Devon steer which also claimed top pounds-per-head of £3,165, all from the same vendor.
UTM steers to 380p/kg (£2,801) for a cracking Limousin from Mr T Eustice of Crantock, Newquay, a Limousin heifer from H A & M J Farming of Kea, Truro parted away at 378p/kg and their best Limousin steer at 374p/kg thereafter.
Cull Cows
Less cows around this week, with a heavy weighting of dairy types presented.
Top of 297p/kg awarded to a strong middle-aged Blue cow from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston, followed by a meaty Blonde cow from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas at 278p/kg (£2,310) and the best South Devon cow in from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro realised 261p/kg.
Dairy types also topped by Messrs Blee with their Friesian cow trading at 271p/kg, followed by a pair of Friesian cows from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell at 256p/kg and 250p/kg.
Store Cattle
A good run of bullocks in this week with steers selling on a fine trade though a largely young entry resulted in only Messrs V C & F Hosking of St Martin, Helston surpassing the £2000 mark, as their 27-month-old trio of Limousins realised £2040.
Mr C Prowse of St Allen, Truro sold 1-year-old Limousins to £1790, £1780 and £1675, with a single 19-month-old Limousin from Mr Prowse achieving £1720.
An 11-month-old Limousin from Mr P I Hodge of Manaccan, Helston parted away at £1670, followed by a 2-year-old Hereford from Messrs Hosking at £1660. Many 1-year-old steers thereafter trading between £1000 and £1600.
Heifers topped at £1870 for a single 27-month-old Angus on behalf of Messrs W R T & A S Guy of Truro, followed by an 18-month-old Limousin from Mr C Prowse at £1800.
Messrs Guy sold a 27-month-old Hereford to £1730, followed by Mr V R Barrett of Truro at £1690 with Messrs V C & F Hosking selling 2-year-old heifers to £1660 and £1620.
Smart heifers also in from Mr P I Hodge achieving £1200, £1195 and £1115 for a nice bunch of four 10-month-olds.
A Hereford cow and calf from Mr M Brown of Newquay achieved £2440, whilst an in-calf heifer from Mr M Hancock of Four Lanes, Redruth parted away at £1900.
Rearing Calves
An overall high quality entry of calves to report selling to a good trade.
Bull calves topped at £645 for a single strong Angus from Messrs S & L Awdry of Ladock, Truro, followed by the usual high quality run of 1 to 2 m.o calves from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at £630 twice for Limousins, £565 and £555 twice for Blues.
Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston saw their best Angus bull at 1 m.o sell away for £475, closely followed by a run of 21 pedigree sired Angus calves from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at £460, £450, £430, £400, £370 and £365 to name just a few.
Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance marketed their strong month-old Blue bull at £430 and Messrs Worden with another month-old Angus bull at £415.
Heifer calves topping at £540 twice for both a 2 m.o Limousin and 2 m.o Blue from Messrs Bray, with a 3 m.o Blue from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at £525.
The best Angus heifer calf to £485 from Messrs Jenkin and a showy young 2 m.o Blue heifer from Messrs C J & P H George went under the hammer at £400.
Only a couple of older stirks forward this week away at £665 for Messrs A G Cave & Son of Rame, Penryn with their Angus steers.
Prime Hoggetts
A good entry forward and lively trade, despite prices easing nationally on the week.
Setting the premium at 330p/kg for a handyweight pen from Mr Brown of Camborne, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Two pens realised £166, firstly for a smart trio of Texel X from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Tregavethan and also for a 52.5kg Charollais from Miss L Monk of Kerley, both sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.
An overall average price of £150/head.
Cull Ewes
A fiery trade for all on offer this week, an overall average of £140 and with buyers seeking more ewes to fulfil their orders.
A fantastic top price of £261 for an outstanding Texel ewe from Mr A W Nicholls of Chacewater, Truro. Further Texel and Texel X to £219 for Messrs W H Morgan & Son of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £185 again for Mr Nicholls; £179.50 for Mr S G Collins of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £170 again for Messrs Morgan and £160 for Mr N Phillips of Wadebridge.
Suffolks to £185 for Mr S G Parkin of Whitemoor, St Austell; and £181 again for Mr Nicholls. Charollais X to £170 for Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay.
Dorsets to £161 for Mr Tom Tremain of St Columb. 2T (sheep) to £160 again for Mr Coad. Rams to £167.50 for a pen of Suffolks again for Mr Parkin.
Store Sheep
A larger entry this week but fewer forward types, although selling on a strong trade nonetheless.
Trade topped at £132 for a smart pair from Mr M J Brown of Camborne, followed by a good pen of 6 from Mr B Cowell of Helston at £130.
Mr S Karpinski of Redruth sold a pen to £124.50, followed by the best of a run from Mr and Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay at £119.50.
The majority of lambs thereafter traded between £100 and £115 with longer term types placing anywhere between £70 and £90.
