Prime Cattle
Another entry with limited top-end premium sorts to report, but trade would look similar to previous weeks with perhaps a very slight easing inline with the deadweight prices.
Nevertheless, a stunning 618kg Limousin heifer from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston raced away to top at 418p/kg (£2,583), followed next by good Limousin steers from Messrs J & J Sawle & Son of St Agnes, Truro at 396p/kg, 390p/kg and 389p/kg.
Next up was an OTM Blonde steer from Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay at 382p/kg and a 680kg Limousin steer from Messrs V C & W G M Cock of Newbridge, Penzance realised 380p/kg (£2,584).
A weighty OTM Blue heifer from Mr Richards parted away at 378p/kg and took top pounds-per-head of £3,043.
A run of Simmental heifers from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance saw a good trade with prices at 375p/kg and 370p/kg twice, with an OTM Limousin heifer from Mr D L Grigg of Truro in the mix at 374p/kg (£2,588).
Cull Cows
A tidy entry of cull cows and three cull bulls to report, with a stand on trade.
Top price of 287p/kg well awarded to a South Devon cow from Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb, Newquay, with a 704kg South Devon cow from Messrs R D & D A Gendall of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston at 278p/kg and a Limousin cow from Mrs V Gay of St Austell realised 275p/kg (£2,098).
Another South Devon cow from Messrs Biddick at 272p/kg (£2,005), a massive 912kg Charolais cow from Mrs Gay at 270p/kg and top pounds-per-head of £2,462 and another Limousin from Messrs Biddick at 268p/kg thereafter.
Dairy types to 249p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, a Friesian cow from Messrs A D & J A Bray close behind at 246p/kg (£2,268) and a Friesian cow from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston at 239p/kg.
Cull bulls to 322p/kg for a young 655kg Limousin from Messrs W T Key & Son of St Breock, Wadebridge.
Store Cattle
Good quality through the ring which topped at £2165 for a pair of 2-year-old Blue steers on behalf of Mr D C Lugg of St Martin, Helston who sold a further pair to £2110.
Also at £2165 were Messrs W R T and A S Guy of Portholland, Truro with their pair of 21-month-old Herefords, whilst a smart run of cattle up from Mr P Roberts of Penzance sold to £2100 for Angus, £1775 for Blues, £1600 for Herefords and £1560 for Simmentals.
A pair of 11-month-old Blonde steers from Messrs E T Noy & Sons of Porkellis, Helston realised £1530, followed by £1470 twice for cracking young 9 m.o
Limousins from Mr M H Bird of The Isles of Scilly. A 7-month-old Blue steer from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of St Columb looked well sold at £1200.
Heifers topped at £1955, again on behalf of Mr D C Lugg whilst a 20-month-old pair of Charolais from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell sold to £1595.
Younger heifers to £1320 for a premium Hereford from Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance followed by a trio of 9-month-old Blues from Messrs A P & S R Hooper at £1300.
Messrs Hooper sold a pair of 13-month-old Simmental bulls to £2100 a piece, whilst Tresco Estate, The Isles of Scilly, sold Limousin cows and calves to £2330.
Rearing Calves
A strong entry of calves through the ring, with the best sorts commanding top prices.
A month-old Blue bull from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston took top honours at £630, followed by an older 3 m.o Blue steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at £615 and a pair of month-old Blue bulls from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of The Lizard, Helston were close behind at £610 and £605.
Another month-old Blue bull this time from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston traded at £600, with the top Simmental bull of the day from Messrs L W & S Hosken of St Keverne, Helston realising £555.
Top young Limousin bull to £525 from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd and best Angus bull of the day to £455 from Messrs Worden.
The best pair of heifers on the day, being 3 m.o strong weaned calves from Messrs Jenkin, realised £615 and £570 and a pair of younger 1 m.o Blue heifers from Messrs Bray at £505 and £460.
The best young Hereford heifer to £415, best Limousin heifer to £375, a Limousin heifer from Sixty Acres Ltd of Zelah, Truro at £305 and a Simmental heifer from Messrs Hosken at £300.
A run of strong mainly Friesian stirks forward from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston saw a fast trade with steers to £560, £465 x 4, £455 x 4 and £410 x 3, and their best shapey 5 m.o Blue heifer to £700.
Prime Hoggetts
A good entry forward but prices easier on the week following the national trends, but overall good demand.
A choice 52.8kg Texel x hogg from Messrs B N & C Hoskins of Silverwell sold to £166, sold to Stillmans of Taunton.
Setting the premium at 326p/kg were a smart pen of 47kg hoggs from Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East, purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd.
Cull Ewes
The cull ewe trade is flying at present and many more ewes are required to satisfy buyer requirements.
All shapes and sizes selling very well, but wellmuscled leaner ewes piquing interest as always.
Top price per head of £199 for a fleshy medium Texel ewe from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge.
Further Texel and Texel x ewes to £185 from Mr W D Pascoe of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £180 for Messrs B N & C Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro; £170 again for Mr Pascoe and £168 again for Messrs Hoskins. Suffolk x Mules to £179 again for Mr Pascoe.
Suffolks to £176 from Mrs A J Gluyas-Morrish of Camborne. Composite ewes to £170 from Messrs Hext Farm Partners of St Just-in-Roseland.
Dorsets to £159.50 from Messrs A J Pellowe & Son of Nancekuke, Redruth; and £148 again for Mrs Gluyas-Morrish. Mules to £153 again for Mr Pascoe.
Two lean Suffolk rams from Mr S G Parkyn of Whitemoor, St Austell looking well sold at £146 and £141.
More sheep (2T) about this week as hoggs begin to cut teeth, selling to £127 and £116 for Messrs P & P Tullett of Truro and £108 again for Messrs Hext Farm Partners.
The prices speak for themselves and the cull ewe average was £155.
Store Sheep
A handy entry of store sheep which saw scanned in lamb two tooth ewes to £238 for doubles and £200 for singles on behalf of Messrs A J Pellowe & Son of Nancekuke, Redruth.
Store hoggs selling to a £117 average and topping at £132.50 for Mr I Littlefield of St Eval, Wadebridge.
Strong stores thereafter to £132 for Mr S G Parkin of St Austell and £130 for Messrs B N & C Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro.
Mr O M Jay of Liskeard sold forward Suffolk x to £126 and many pens thereafter trading in excess of £110.
