Prime Cattle

A definite lift in the trade this week for all shapes and sizes.

Top of the day to 418p/kg (£2,583) for a good 618kg Limousin heifer from Messrs R G, E J & G A Williams of St Martin, Helston, followed by a 633kg Limousin heifer from Trevedra Farm Partnership of Penzance at 408p/kg (£2,583).

Steers to 399p/kg (£2,841) for a 712kg Limousin from F G Pryor & Son Ltd of Perranwell Station, Truro, with a second Limousin heifer at 621kg from Messrs Williams at 397p/kg (£2,465) thereafter.

An OTM Limousin steer from F G Pryor & Son Ltd made 390p/kg (£2,785), another good Hereford steer from the same farming traded at 385p/kg (£2,568) and a 707kg Angus steer from Messrs A R, B & A Hosking of St Martin, Helston parted away at 382p/kg.

Cull Cows

The cull section would also look a strong trade, with a heavy weighting of dairy types forward.

Top price to an 804kg Hereford cull bull from Mr H G Dark of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston at 315p/kg (£2,533), with a good 608kg Limousin cow from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 308p/kg and the top dairy type being a Friesian cow from Messrs J M & A J Laity of Rosudgeon, Penzance sold away at 302p/kg.

Mr Julian back in the ring with his 718kg Limousin cow at 298p/kg (£2,140) and a weighty 810kg Blue cow from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne at 280p/kg (£2,268).

Further dairy types to 268p/kg for another Friesian cow from Messrs Laity, 259p/kg for a Jersey heifer from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth and 245p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston.

Store Cattle

A fine trade topping at £2480 for a single 20-month-old Charolais steer on behalf of Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes, Truro who sold a further pair to £2455 and a 30-month-old single to £2365.

Messrs J R Stevens & Son of Lostwithiel sold 2-year-old South Devons to £2295 and £2210 followed by a pair of 20-month-old Devons from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston at £1900 and 18-month-old old steers from Mr R Roberts of Penzance to £1895 for Blues and £1860 for Herefords.

Younger steers to £1650 for a 1-year-old Angus on behalf of Mr R Roberts, followed by a 12-month-old Blonde from Messrs E T Noy & Sons of Porkellis, Helston at £1630 with further lots from the same Vendor to £1515.

Heifers selling to £2210 for fine 2-year-old Charolais on behalf of Mr A Blamey of Veryan, Truro, who sold younger Charolais to £1950 whilst Messrs J R Stevens & Son sold a 21-month-old South Devon heifer to £2090 and a 2-year-old Angus to £1800.

A trio of 2-year-old Limousins from Messrs J M & A J Laity of Rosudgeon, Penzance realised £1700, followed by a pair of 20-month-old Herefords from Messrs R & D P Rule of Mawla, at £1650.

Younger heifers to £1315 on behalf of Messrs E T Noy & Sons, followed by a 13-month-old Blue from Mr W J Kitto of Gwennap, Camborne at £1310, whilst a pair of 11-month-old Limos from Messrs L J Richards & Son of United Downs, Redruth parted away at £1240.

A 33-month-old Simmental bull from Mr B Cowell of Helston sold to £2260, whilst an in-calf Friesian cow from Messrs J M & A J Laity sold to £1930.

Rearing Calves

Numbers tight but a flying trade for all on offer, selling away to the ringside full of active weekly buyers.

Top of the day to £595 for a 3 m.o Hereford heifer calf from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, followed by a pair of 3 m.o Limousin bull calves from the same stable at £580, also tied with a 5 m.o Limousin heifer from Mr W J Hosken of Manaccan, Helston at the same money.

Into the younger calves, a shapey 2 m.o Blue heifer from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston realised £445, a pair of Angus bulls realised £440; one from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son of Hewaswater, St Austell and the second from Mr Hosken.

Further strong 2 m.o Angus bulls to £438 for Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro and a smart 2 m.o Charolais heifer from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance looked well sold at £395.

A run of good Friesian steer stirks from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston saw another blistering trade, topping at £620 x 5, £535 x 3, £530 x 6 to name but a few – overall average across the consignment of £547.67.

Prime Hoggetts

A mixture of quality and finish with the wet weather making finishing difficult. A steady trade with similar averages to recent weeks.

An overall average price of £145 with prices peaking at £158.50 for a pen of 56.3kg Dorset hoggs from Will and Robyn Taffinder of Ruan High Lanes, Truro sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium at 314p/kg were a pen of lights 39.7kg hoggs from Messrs D C & J M Colton of Grampound Road purchased by R J Trevethan Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

Only a handful of cull sheep this week but the fast trade continues and we would encourage vendors to capitalise and consign in forthcoming weeks.

Well fleshed continentals in from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay topped the section at £192 and £160, followed by quality Dorsets from Messrs A J & A C Kingdon of Newquay at £153.

Cull rams to £163 and £148 for Messrs B N & C Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro, Whilst Mr T D Retallick of Talskiddy, St Columb sold a ram to £157.

Store Sheep

A better entry to report averaging £107 and topping at £128 for a strong single from Mr and Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay.

Stores from Mr S P Bache of Mount Hawke, Truro achieved £125 and £124, followed by two smart pens from Messrs D L & J M Colton or Truro realising £124.50 and £121.50.
