Prime Cattle
A quality entry of Prime Cattle yet again this week, with the Truro Trade setting the pace for finished cattle in the South West.
Top of the day to a mighty young Blue heifer from Mrs Gail Ellis of Lelant, St Ives at 415p/kg (£2,511), with both a 721kg Limousin steer from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston and a 686kg Limousin heifer from Mr R H Eddy of Tehidy, Camborne tied next at 410p/kg (£2,956 & £2,813 respectively).
Another pair of solid Limo steers tied at 408p/kg next being a 707kg animal from Messrs R G, E J & G A Williams of St Martin, Helston at £2,885 and a 714kg bullock from Messrs Bryant at £2,913.
Two further Limousin steers tied at 400p/kg; one being a 734kg from Messrs Bryant at £2,936 and another from Messrs Williams at £2,776.
A good Simmental heifer from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance at 388p/kg, a 667kg Angus steer from Messrs Williams at 386/kg, a Limousin heifer from F G Pryor & Son Ltd of Perranwell Station, Truro at 385p/kg and a Limousin steer from Messrs Bryant at 384p/kg (£2,753).
Cull Cows
A good entry and stand-on trade to match, topping at 319p/kg (£2,488) for a 780kg Limousin cow from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston, followed by an 811kg South Devon cow from Messrs W B & S P Penrose of Praze-an-Beeble, Camborne at 300p/kg (£2,433).
A pair of good South Devon cows from Messrs S & C Taffinder of Portscatho, Truro at 295p/kg (£2,230) and 288p/kg (£2,120), with a Blue cow from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne well in the mix at 290p/kg (£2,395).
Another South Devon cow from Messrs Penrose parted away at 288p/kg and a 734kg Limousin cow from Messrs P V & C S Forway of Threemilestone, Truro traded at 286p/kg.
Dairy types to 238p/kg (£2,016) for an 847kg Friesian cow from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston and a Fleckvieh cow from Messrs L C & P Pengilly & Son of St Keverne, Helston at 234p/kg thereafter.
A single Shorthorn cull bull from Mr R J Trezise of Morvah, Penzance, which passed over the weighbridge at 1114kg, parted away at 266p/kg and £2,963.
Store Cattle
A cracking high-quality entry through the ring saw heifers top the charts at £2430 for a phenomenal trio of 21-month-old Charolais from Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes, Truro, who sold further fine heifers to £2420 and £2350.
A trio of 2-year-old South Devon heifers from Messrs J R Stephens & Son of St Winnow, Lostwithiel achieved £2020, followed by 2-year-old Limos from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro at £1895.
2-year-old South Devon heifers from Mr J C Ball of St Merryn, Padstow achieved £1820 and £1660, whilst 2-year-old Blues from Messrs J M, S K & J K Sawle of Gunwalloe, Helston parted away at £1790. 1 year old heifers to £1055 on behalf of Mr A S Johns of Praze an Beeble, Camborne.
Steers selling to £2350 on behalf of Messrs Stephens & Son for their tremendous trio of 2-year-old South Devons, followed by 20-month-old Blues from Mr A Blamey of Veryan, Truro at £2295 and South Devons from Mr J C Ball to £2250.
Mr C Eustice of Crantock, Newquay sold South Devons twice to £2220, whilst 2-year-old steers from Messrs J M, S K and J K Sawle realised £2120 for Blues, £1995 for Herefords, £1910 for Limousins and £1895 for Simmentals.
Best of the younger steers coming from Messrs J M Richards & Son of Hayle achieving storming prices with their only 11 month old animals to £2010, with further fine Limos from the same farm to £1935 and £1880.
Messrs J E Nicholls & Son of Ludgvan, Penzance sold 1 year old Devon steers to £1480 twice, whilst Mr A S Johns of Praze an Beeble, Camborne sold a 1-year-old Hereford to £1470.
Limousin cows and calves from Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly parting away at £2310 and £2330.
Rearing Calves
Another fast trade for calves, with good overall quality presented.
Top price bull calf to £675 for a strong 2 m.o Blue from Mr W R Davey of Probus, Truro, followed by a 3 m.o Angus steer from Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at £635 and a smart pair of month-old Blue bulls from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro looked well sold at £515 and £505.
Messrs Jenkin back in the ring with their other 3 m.o Angus steer at £495 and further Blue bulls from Messrs George at £480, £475, £455, £445 and £415.
Messrs R D & R V Cookson of Ninemaidens, Redruth saw their 3 m.o Angus bulls away at £465 and £440 twice, followed by a month-old Limousin bull from Sixty Acres Ltd of Zelah, Truro at £415.
Heifers very well topped by a shapey 3 m.o Blue from Messrs Jenkin at £610, with a pair of same-age Angus heifers from the same farming tied at £525.
Messrs George back with Blue heifers at £430 and £400 and month-old Blues from Sixty Acres at £400 and £395.
A run of well turned out 4 m.o Blue steer stirks from Messrs N J Cox & H Floyd of Tregony, Truro raced away to £695 thrice and their others at £610 and £580.
Heifer stirks topped at £650 for a well fleshed 4 m.o Blue from Mr R G Rowe of London Apprentice, St Austell and further Blues from Cox & Floyd at £630, £545 and £530.
Finished Hoggetts
Improved averages on the week. The prolonged wet weather is taking its toll, with producers noting the challenge of finishing hoggs and impacting numbers matured nationally.
A good fleshed 59kg hogg from Miss Rebecca Frank of Kerley, Chacewater topped the hoggs at £158.50, sold to L C Farms Ltd of Highampton.
Setting the premium at 335p/kg were a pen of 39.1kg hoggs from Messrs A J & S T Richards of St Keverne, Helston purchased by R J Trevarthen of Roskrow.
Cull Ewes
Continued strong trade for cull ewes, selling to £192 for a medium Texel from Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge.
Further Texel and Texel X ewes from the same Vendor selling to £169 and £147. A good run of Texel and crossed ewes from Mr W L Hollow of Towednack, St Ives selling to £162.50, £144.50 and £143.
Mules to £147 from Mr S Bucknell of Kestle Mill, Newquay and £146 from Mr T Hall of Cardinham, Bodmin. Suffolk Mules to £146 from Mr B Bucknell of Kestle Mill, Newquay.
Rams also in high demand, topping at £171 for a Zwartbles from Miss S Mannix of Ponsanooth, Truro and £170 for a Poll Dorset from Mr J S Varco of Golant, Fowey. 2T (Sheep) to £137.50 for a Suffolk again from Mr T Hall.
Store Sheep
Very light in numbers this week but another good trade topping at £140.50 on behalf of Miss S Mannix of Ponsanooth, Truro.
Messrs A J & S T Richards of St Keverne, Helston sold a good pen to £126, followed by two neat pens from Fentongollan Farms of Tresillian, Truro at £119 and £110.
Mr T Hall of Cardinham, Bodmin sold a forward single to £116. Many more could have been sold and vendors are encouraged to consign in forthcoming weeks.
