Emergency services were scrambled after receiving reports a woman and her dog had fallen over the edge of a cliff in Newquay on Saturday morning.

Newquay and St Agnes Coastguard Rescue Teams along with Newquay RNLI Lifeboats attended the incident at West Pentire point shortly after 9am.

Shortly after the teams arrival it became apparent that the woman had managed to make it back to the top of the cliff but the dog was still stuck part way down.

The team rigged up and a cliff rescue was put into action with the lifeboat standing by below.

Fortunately the dog was successfully reunited with its owner unharmed.

Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team has urged dog walkers to keep their pets on a lead near the cliff edge following the incident.

A Coastguard spokesman said: “Please keep your dog on a lead when walking along the coast path, no matter how well behaved they normally are.

“Please, please, please do not attempt to rescue anyone in difficulty yourself, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”

The woman rescued said: “I would like to thank the emergency services so much and I apologise for what happened.

“They do an amazing job.”
