THE South West Peninsula Methodist District will be overseeing the renovation of Mousehole Church.

The trustees and members of the church are joining forces with the district to preserve the church which is . Grade II listed and is one of the the oldest churches in Cornwall.

District property officer, Patrick Reynolds, said: “Plans are currently progressing that will enable the Chapel to become one of four major Methodist heritage sites within the newly formed South West Peninsula Methodist District.

“Mousehole Chapel has a very special and unique history, and its establishment as a major heritage site within the District will enable its story to be told and shared with both the local community and the large number of visitors who are attracted to the area throughout the year.

“It is hoped that the essential restoration work will be able to commence in August this year.”

The church had to close in 2021 owing to rising damp taking hold in parts of the flooring and it was decided that for health reasons the doors would have to be closed until the problem could be remedied.

Work on the church will begin as soon as possible to save the building from deteriorating and having to close permanently. However, due to a shortfall of funding for the complete renovation, the church is asking members of the public to help them raise sufficient funds for the project.
