DANCERS from the Big Dance Company recently triumphed at the DanceStars European Championships in The Netherlands.

32 dancers embarked on an incredible 18-hour journey by bus and boat to compete in one of the year’s most prestigious dance competitions.

Alongside 90 other schools and over 1500 dancers from around the globe, they battled for the coveted European Championship titles in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, and open categories.

The event took place in Eindhoven, and the weekend kicked off with electrifying energy.

The dancers entered with force on the first day where Isla Swann, just 10 years old, captured the first European title in the under 13 category.

Shortly after, Lexie Franklin claimed the title in the under 15 advanced open category.

The Cornish Pixies continued to dazzle, bringing home an impressive total of 16 European titles, a record achievement for the Penzance-based dance company.

The last events of the weekend saw South West Movement Company winning the European Title for over 18 Advanced Team. Animate Company won Under 15 Advanced Team, celebrating in a fantastic display of fireworks that had many of the parents in tears of joy.

This remarkable weekend was strategically planned by Ben and Fiona Richardson, the company directors, who, with the unwavering support of dedicated parents Helen and Paul Thirlby, Claire Franklin and Rachel Williams, aimed not only for competitive success but also for a chance for dancers to immerse themselves in Dutch culture, build international connections, and create lasting memories.

“These experiences foster personal growth, new friendships, and a celebration of their passion for dance,” Fiona stated.

Throughout the weekend, the dancers not only competed but also had the opportunity to learn from world-class choreographers and teachers, bonding with new friends and participating in a gala designed to celebrate their hard work and achievements.

Fiona expressed her pride, stating: “The biggest highlight of my weekend was having judges approach me to compliment our dancers on their talent, kindness, enthusiasm, and discipline.

“They were not only well-trained but also lovely kids with a genuine passion for dance. This is what we strive for at the studio - equipping our young people with personal and social skills, and instilling respect.”

Following their triumphant weekend, the dancers held their annual show at The Regal in Redruth yesterday (June 22) which celebrated 25 years of the Big Dance Company.

The full school performance featuring dancers as young as four took place first before the evening show honoured the European champions and showcased other exceptional companies who have competed this year.
