A WOMAN from Redruth will be taking on a 24-hour challenge to support The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust.
Leona Botheras, 25, is gearing up for an extraordinary fundraising challenge to support The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, a charity close to her heart. On June 7 and 8, Leona and her event partner will participate in Endure24 at Wasing Park, Reading.
This demanding event will see the duo take turns running an 8km loop, pushing themselves to complete as many laps as possible within 24 hours.
All proceeds from their efforts will go toward The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, an organisation supporting women and families affected by ectopic pregnancies.
Ectopic pregnancies occur when a fertilised egg implants outside the womb, a condition that affects 1 in 80 pregnancies and can be life-threatening. Tragically, these pregnancies cannot be saved, and treatment typically involves careful monitoring, medication, or surgery.
Leona’s journey with The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust began after experiencing an ectopic pregnancy herself. At the time, she initially mistook symptoms like unusual bleeding and shoulder pain for muscular strain due to her work on a farm. However, severe abdominal pain led her to seek urgent medical care, where she was diagnosed and treated with keyhole surgery.
Reflecting on her experience, Leona said: "Nothing can prepare you for the heartbreak of losing a child, whether you were planning to have children or not.
“After my ectopic pregnancy, I discovered The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust online and reached out for support. Their resources and compassion were life-changing, and I’m so grateful. Raising money to help them continue their incredible work means everything to me."
The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust provides education, awareness, and vital support to women and families navigating the aftermath of ectopic pregnancies. Leona hopes her participation in Endure24 will not only raise funds but also help spread awareness about the condition and its impact.
Leona and her partner are currently training hard to prepare for this gruelling challenge. To support their efforts, donations can be made at: www.justgiving.com/page/leona-botheras-1726048153688.
