THE community’s festive spirit shone through as Newquay kicked off its Christmas celebrations on Friday night.

Hundreds of people attended Newquay Lantern Parade and Trenance Cottages switch on event.

The lantern procession made its way to Trenance Cottages in a dazzling display through the valley, which included a one-of-a-kind willow train lantern and pupils from seven schools carrying the lanterns they have made for the festive occasion.

The façade of the heritage cottages was lit up alongside the Christmas tree as well as the gardens including the foot bridge over the stream, which will be followed by entertainment from crooner Andy Marshall.

Mayor Cllr Drew Creek said: “It was great to see the community come out in in their hundreds to both take part and cheer on the Trenance Valley Lantern parade for the second year.

“Huge thank you to the schools and children who built lanterns for the parade and a massive thanks to the wonderful Blystra Arts who once again put so much into organising this event. What a brilliant start to Newquay’s Christmas festivities.”
