The Coastguard has renewed calls for dog owners to keep their pets on a lead near the cliff edge after a second incident in a matter of days.

Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to Polly Joke following reports that a dog that had gone over the edge of a cliff on Wednesday, June 28 at about 12.45pm.

Shortly after leaving the station the team were stood down as the dog had self-recovered.

The incident follows emergency services being scrambled after reports were received a woman and her dog had fallen over the edge of a cliff at West Pentire Point on Saturday, June 24 at about 9am.

Shortly after the teams arrival it became apparent that the dog’s owner had managed to make it back to the top of the cliff but the dog was still stuck part way down. 

The team rigged up and a cliff rescue was put into action with the lifeboat standing by below. 

Fortunately the dog was successfully reunited with its owner unharmed.

A Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue spokesman said: “Please keep your dog on a lead when along the coast path no matter how well behaved they normally are, for the sake of the dog, livestock and rescue teams.”
