A PRESTIGIOUS Newquay choir is being joined for a performance by a choir from over the Tamar border.

Newquay Male Voice Choir is staging a gala concert with Barnstaple Male Voice Choir on Saturday, September 27 at 6.30pm.

Concert co-ordinator Jim Christophers said: “Barnstaple Male Voice Choir is making the long trip from over the Tamar to join us.

Barnstaple MVC was formed as long ago as 1919 and has established a reputation for the variety of their repertoire and the quality of their singing. They are not averse to travelling, having made visits to Ireland, Brittany, Italy and Central France over recent years.

“They were last in Cornwall in 2024 when they participated in the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival, performing in the Princess Pavillion, Pendennis Castle and All Saint’s Church, all in Falmouth.

“If you have not heard Newquay Male Voice Choir recently then you have been missing a treat. Our still quite new music team, MD, Tony Harries, assistant MD, Spud Yeomans, and accompanist, Rachel Margetts, have been working hard adding new pieces and arrangements to our repertoire and putting their own style on the performance and presentation of the choir.

“It is a cliché to suggest that this will be an evening not to be missed but, in this case, it is very true. Visits to Newquay always seem to draw out the best from our guest choirs while performing alongside another choir always draws something special from the host choir.”

Admission to the concert is £5 on the door and there will be a retiring charity collection.
