A CAMPAIGN has been launched to stop a bargain chain store in Newquay from closing down.
The Save Newquay's Poundland Store petition has been started following the announcement the Poundland shop in Bank Street is earmarked to close on August 1.
Resident Sharon Gill decide to take action to persuade Poundland bosses to change their mind on closing the store as it provides affordable shopping for people in the community.
She said: “In Newquay, many residents count on Poundland for their everyday needs. The reality for most of us is that we don’t have the luxury of a car to travel to nearby towns.
“Our options are limited when it comes to affordable shopping. The nearest alternatives in St Austell or Truro are inconveniently far away, and public transport means hours of commute for essentials that should be easily accessible. “Poundland has been a steadfast part of our community here in Newquay, providing affordable essentials to all of us, from household items to groceries. The closure of our local store would force many into difficult positions, needing to stretch already tight budgets even further.
“The trend of closing stores in smaller towns not only affects the convenience of shopping but also impacts jobs and the community spirit that local businesses foster. Poundland's presence in Newquay is vital, offering both employment and an accessible shopping option for those who need it most.
“To maintain the vibrancy and accessibility of our community, it is crucial that Newquay’s Poundland remains open. We need to stand together and let the decision-makers at Poundland know how essential this store is to our everyday lives.
“I appeal to people to sign the petition to save our Poundland and help keep Newquay connected and thriving for everyone.”
Mark Warren, the manager of Newquay BID, said: “It sad to hear that Poundland in Newquay is set to close beginning of August.
“This is an important large business in the centre of Newquay that is used by many in the community for daily necessities.
“I understand the Poundland as a business is closing non-profit making shops around the country, but it seems that this is may be the landlords decision so I can only assume they have another retailer interested in the site.
“I personally know the hard-working team in Poundland Newquay so I’m sad that they are having to find new employment and wish them all good luck in the future “
