GREEN-fingered gardeners have been recognised for making their gardens bloom.

Newquay in Bloom’s annual gardens competition rewarded residents who entered various categories which included wildlife friendly garden and vegetable garden.

The entries were judged by Bob Ollier and Barbara Hannan in line with Royal Horticulture Society’s judging guidelines.

The courtyard garden section was won by Andrew Rippin with Paul Rayment in second place, Sue Methorst in third and Zoe Dixon as well as Arthur Pollard in fourth.

The cottage garden category was awarded to Tina Griffin in first place, Andrew Rippin in second and Peter Mann in third.

Rosemary Hague was judged the winner in the wildlife friendly front garden class with James and Mary Bird in second and Susan Jackson in third. The wildlife friendly back garden competition was won by James and Mary Bird, Rosemary Hague in second, Andrea York in third and Ian Fox in fourth.

Steph and Clive Blake were awarded first place in the own style front garden section, Jan Nunns in second, Stephn Wilk in third and Valeries Tams in fourth. The own style back garden competition was won by Dave Evison with Margaret Lagor in second and Jackie Sutton as well as Steph and Clive Blake in fourth.

Callie Kent was awarded first place in the new garden category, Karen Jackson in second and Nicola Keast as well as Sabrina Lleshi in fourth. The vegetable garden section saw Susan Jackson’s efforts judged as the winner, James and Mary Bird in second, Sabrina Lleshi in third and Andrea York in fourth.

The allotment category winner was Patrick Stephens with Matt Dight and Andrew Champion in second. Ian Fox was awarded the win in the garden pond section and Carolyn Armstrong won the large garden competition, which was a new category for this year.

Bloom secretary Lesley Friel said: “The judges were really impressed, and it is clear from collating the marks that the standard was really high this year.”

The awards presentation evening will be held at St Michael’s Church on Tuesday, October 14 at 7pm. There will be refreshments, a raffle and a chance to see a presentation of the winning gardens.
