A pasty making competition with amateur and professional categories will be at the heart of Truro Farmers’ Market’s annual St Piran’s Day celebration, on Saturday, March 2 from 9am to 4pm.
The highly-anticipated pasty making competition is back alongside an epic new struggle, The Battle of The Bakeries.
As in previous years, the pasty making competition is open to all, and will be judged by members of the Buscombe family from The Cornish Mill & Bakehouse, where four generations work together to produce a wide range of bread, cakes, biscuits and delicious pasties.
There are two categories: ‘Cornwall’ calls for excellence in traditional Cornish pasty-making, whereas ‘Rest of the World’ asks for experimental or fusion flavours and ingredients.
The judges will be looking for good crimping skills, great quality ingredients, and excellent taste across both categories.
Competitors are asked to bring their ready-to-eat pasty (hot or cold) to the dedicated judging area on Lemon Quay between 10am and midday on March 2.
The winner will be announced later that day, and there are prizes for each category.
The Battle Of The Bakeries is an opportunity for pasty professionals to get involved; those interested in taking part should keep an eye on Truro Farmers’ Market’s social media platforms or email stewart@truro farmers.co.uk for more information.
The market will also see a bumper gathering of local producers showing off their wares to herald the early arrival of spring in Cornwall. Sweet Cornish treats will take centre stage, including saffron buns, hevva cake, Cornish fairings and scones.
Cornwall’s finest food and drink producers will be out in force alongside street food sellers to satiate all appetites, from gourmet burgers to loaded fries, warming curries to colourful poke bowls, cookie sandwiches to freshly made crepes.
Sustainable fashion, handmade jewellery, organic skincare, and vintage collectables are just a few of the art and craft purveyors booked to attend.
As in previous years, the market stalls will be interspersed with entertainment, family activities, street performers and vintage tractors
Live music, including from Cornish singer songwriter Will Keating, will provide a special St Piran’s soundtrack for marketgoers.
