POLICE are appealing for witnesses and footage following an incident of suspected racially aggravated criminal damage at Cornwall Islamic Community Centre near Truro.

Substantial damage was caused to the metal gates at the centre in Quenchwell Road overnight between Thursday, September 17 and today (Friday, September 18). It is believed the gates were deliberately struck by a vehicle.

An unknown substance, possibly oil, was also poured within the grounds and on the exterior wall of the centre.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone with information which can assist with the investigation, including details of any suspicious vehicles in the area.

Chief Superintendent Scott Bradley, police commander for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: “Due to the location of the incident, we are treating it as racially aggravated criminal damage until such time as the evidence suggests otherwise.

“Such acts of mindless vandalism will not be welcomed in our communities. I would like to assure local residents that they can expect to see reassurance patrols being carried out today and over the weekend.”

Ch Supt Bradley urged anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area at the time, or who has any information that could assist the investigation, to contact the non-emergency number 101 or report via the Devon and Cornwall Police website quoting log no 169 of 18/9/26.
