THE Tregothnan Open Garden Weekend raised almost £80,000 to help two Cornish charities in their important work.
The event saw more than 4,000 visitors pour through Tregothnan’s private gates on April 26 and 27 for a once-a-year opportunity to experience Cornwall’s finest botanical garden.
The private estate near Truro has been home to the Boscawen family since 1334 and each year generously supports nominated charities chosen by the estate.
The Women’s Centre Cornwall, a charity supporting women and girls living with the impact of domestic and sexual abuse, was granted £65,000. Chief executive Jackie May said: “With this extraordinary gift, we have the opportunity to meet some significant challenges in supporting women and girls, and we anticipate kickstarting an exciting new initiative.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to the Tregothnan team for selecting us for this special honour, as well everyone who attended and supported the event.”
The weekend’s secondary charity beneficiary, Cornwall Historic Churches Trust (CHCT), was granted £13,000. The trust gives small grants to support the historic fabric of religious buildings of all denominations throughout the Duchy. Tregothnan owner Viscount Falmouth is the trust’s honorary life president.
“Being part of Tregothnan’s private garden weekend was a phenomenal opportunity for CHCT on the occasion of our 70th anniversary,” said trust chair Cecilia Bisson. “I am bowled over by the generosity of Viscount and Lady Falmouth.”

Over the weekend visitors discovered ancient camellias, mountainous magnolias and the biggest rhododendrons in the world. The historic stable yard was transformed into a fabulous food court.
Jonathon Jones, managing director of trading at Tregothnan, added: “It is always a delight to open our gates and see the estate thronged with visitors – especially when it is in aid of such deserving charities.”
