Fly-half Cummins stars as Reds continue perfect start against Barnstaple

REDRUTH made it a hat-trick of wins to start the season as they saw off Barnstaple in wet and windy conditions at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

The Reds had put 60 points past both Bournville and Devonport Services and were on the board within three minutes via a penalty from fly-half Joe Cummins. The man-of-the-match then added a second on the quarter-hour mark.

That advantage was increased to 13-0 via No.8 Fin Wolstencroft on the half-hour which once again Cummins added the extras to.

However, Barum ensured the deficit was down to six by the break as prop George Snell crashed over from close-range with winger Cameron Grizzle-Johnson making no mistake off the tee.

Cornish Pirates back-rower Josh King was introduced for Mawgan Osborne at the break, but within two minutes Barnstaple were ahead via a penalty try that also saw hooker Tom Cowan-Dickie sin-binned.

However, once back to their full allocation, the Reds gradually got on top and it was Cowan-Dickie that made amends just after the hour with Cummins once again on the mark (20-14).

On 66 minutes the fly-half added a superb 40-metre drop-goal to put further daylight between the two sides, and Redruth’s cause was helped even further when centre Ryan Lee was yellow-carded with 10 to play.

Centre Noah Clifford gave Redruth a third try shortly after as they held on for another victory. The Reds are on their travels on Saturday to Exeter University (3pm).
