South West Peninsula League Premier West preview – Saturday, October 3
A HUGE game awaits at Sticker on Saturday as the hosts welcome fellow high-flyers Penzance to Burngullow Park.
While the visitors are one of the county’s oldest and well-known clubs, the villagers have quietly put together an impressive squad under Dan Nancarrow, one good enough to have won eight of their nine outings so far to sit on 24 points.
Four adrift, albeit with a game in-hand are Penzance who are putting together a plan on and off the field to try and return to the Western League.
However, with leaders AFC St Austell, who host strugglers Wendron United, setting a fine pace with nine wins and three draws from their 12 outings, the trio can ill-afford many mistakes.
That said, Wendron travel with less pressure on them following a fine 2-0 success over Dobwalls last weekend which came via Harry Morton and sub Reece Bansy as they moved up to fourth bottom.
Another huge game is at Upcott Field as the fourth side right in contention – Callington Town – head to fourth-placed Holsworthy.
The Magpies held Penzance to a 1-1 draw last weekend while Cally had the weekend off. However, they have six wins from seven and could be a bolter in the title race.
In between them are Camelford who are on a three-match winning streak having seen off Hayle, Launceston and Falmouth Town Reserves, and the week off will for their sake, hopefully put them in good stead for the always-awkward trip to Millbrook.
The hosts were beaten on penalties at Dobwalls in midweek in the Cornwall Senior Cup and need to start putting some points on the board in the league having collected just four from a possible 27.
The only side below them are winless Dobwalls who have the weekend off.
Elsewhere in the division, Bude Town, unbeaten in six games and sitting nicely in eighth with games in-hand on several sides above them, host Falmouth, while Launceston visit fellow strugglers Mousehole in a game both teams could do with reward from.
Promoted duo Hayle and St Mawgan meet in West Cornwall with both teams well-placed in ninth and 12th respectively.
St Mawgan have picked up four points from their last two outings while Hayle backed up their league win at Wadebridge Town last Saturday by knocking Helston Athletic out of the Senior Cup.
The 10th-placed Bridgers are on their travels to Helston in the league tomorrow with a two-point buffer over the Blues.
Fixtures (3pm): AFC St Austell v Wendron United, Bude Town v Falmouth Town Reserves, Hayle v St Mawgan, Helston v Wadebridge Town, Holsworthy v Callington Town, Millbrook v Camelford, Mousehole v Launceston, Sticker v Penzance.
