St Mawgan make fine start at Step Six at Mousehole

ST MAWGAN showed they mean business in their inaugural Step Six adventure as they eased to a 3-1 victory at a new-look Mousehole side on Saturday.

St Mawgan, based near Newquay, have gradually worked their way up over the years, while their opponents are in a rebuild having voluntarily dropped two leagues from Southern League Division One South.

The visitors took the lead inside four minutes via striker Craig Allen before Tom Barnett doubled the lead when he broke away down the left before making no mistake, but the hosts were back in before the break when a deflected free-kick was swept in.

St Mawgan saw a player controversially red-carded, but they added a third late on when Allen applied the finishing touch to a breakaway.

With a shortened programme due to the Boardmasters festival at Newquay, there were four other games across the weekend.

On Friday night, Sticker thrashed a much-changed Wadebridge Town side 6-1 in front of 177 supporters at Burngullow Park.

Sol Wilson had the villagers ahead on five minutes before the Bridgers equalised via Ben Colquhoun 11 minutes later.

Eli Evans made it 2-1 within two minutes of the leveller, but Sticker piled on the pressure after the break with Wilson adding three more before Cam Bidgood got the last.

Saturday’s action saw Wendron United secure a 2-1 success at Millbrook.

The hosts led through Josh Payn, but the Dron turned it around via Rio Watson and Dan Slaney.

Callington Town are expected to be in the mix following last year’s third-placed finish and they saw off Dobwalls 4-1 at the Ginsters Marsh.

Luke Gale gave the Dingos a surprise sixth minute lead, however Cally scored twice before the break via an own goal and Harvey Barrett which was added to later on by Calum Courts (65) and Huck Enticknap (75).

A dominant St Austell won 2-0 at Holsworthy thanks to returning skipper Neil Slateford’s brace in the second half.
