FA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND

Frome Town 2 Newquay 1

DESPITE another superb goal from Rhys Simmonds, Newquay were unable to cash in on having a man advantage for more than an hour as their FA Cup adventure came to an end at Badgers Hill on Saturday.

A 78th minute Albie Hopkins goal settled the tie only eight minutes after Simmonds had levelled things up for the Peppermints with another of his special finishes.

Zac Brew had broken the deadlock with a 64th minute goal for the Southern League Division One side, who had played with 10 men since the 21st minute when Sam Heal was shown red for denying Simmonds a goalscoring opportunity.

Newquay were also reduced to 10 men six minutes from time when midfield man Cam Turner saw red for a late challenge.

The tie had started 20 minutes late after Newquay, who set off in good time, were caught in traffic jams.

Peppermints boss Shaun Middleton said: “We played a very good team in Frome who were extremely well-drilled and set up who you could tell were from a higher standard with superb facilities. And great support.

“But we pushed them to their last breath with again being real short of bodies, which is frustrating at the moment. But I am so proud of the lads who travelled up.”

He went on: “I feel we competed and played good clean football; even when the numbers were the same there was very little in it.

“Just before the break we could have gone in at 1-0 but we didn’t. In the second half I feel we were moving the ball well but changed how we were playing, not to sure why but we did.

“It gave them more opportunity to gain possession and with good players that’s not what we wanted as they were dangerous on the break and they scored a breakaway goal.

“But once again young Rhys (Simmonds) scored a great goal from outside the box after superb build-up play with Phil Lowry.

“But then about five minutes from time they scored a really good goal with a breakaway when we were pushing for the winner.

“We would have liked to have got them down for a replay in front of our supporters midweek, but it wasn’t to be. We need to regroup and go again.

“I would like to thank Frome for their hospitality and also to the supporters who travelled up.”

TORPOINT Athletic are the last Western League club standing in the FA Cup after the Cornishmen won 4-2 at Sidmouth Town.

The Point travelled having picked up 10 points from a possible 12, including a 1-0 victory over St Blazey in midweek.

They also rested the likes of Joe Rapson and Curtis Damerell and found themselves 2-0 down inside half an hour after Louis Spalding scored twice in the space of 60 seconds (25 and 26).

But by the break Torpoint levelled via Ryan Richards and Dave Barker, before Damerell was introduced on the hour.

He went on to score two including the first from the penalty spot.
