NEWQUAY AFC’s three senior men’s teams had a mixed day on Saturday.

The firsts headed up to Somerset to take on Street in the Western League Premier Division without boss Shaun Middleton due to a wedding, however they still proved too strong for their hosts.

Winger Tom Shepherd, who later had to go in goal in injury-time following a sin-bin to goalkeeper Shaun Semmens, opened the scoring on 17 minutes before Louis Price built on his hat-trick against Cullompton Rangers a week earlier – with the second just two minutes after the break.

Former Falmouth and Mousehole winger Tim Nixon added his first goal on 50 minutes when he followed up Price’s saved penalty to dispatch the rebound.

Street pulled one back in injury-time through Chris Barrett’s lob, however the Peppermints eased to victory to bounce back from their recent reversal at Saltash United.

Newquay now start a run of six straight home games in all competitions, starting with Saturday’s visit from bottom side Wellington. That is followed by a tasty first round clash with ambitious Penzance in the Cornwall Senior Cup three days later.

The reserves, top of the St Piran League Premier Division East table with nine wins and a solitary defeat after promotion, visited Mullion in the Cornwall Intermediate Cup, however went down 3-2 at Clifden Parc despite Ben Shaw’s brace as Phil Cattran slotted home an 89th minute winner.

The thirds – better known as Newquay Under 23s – stay second in Division Two East of the St Piran League following a 3-0 success over visiting Week St Mary with James Deacy, Josh Stratton and Alfie Treweek all on target.
