FOUR Cornish sides are through to the first round of the ECB National Club Championship after a dramatic Sunday across the South West.

While last year’s runners-up Penzance had been handed a bye and Helston a walkover by Dartington and Totnes, Wadebridge and Truro also advanced, the latter in a thriller with Plymouth thanks to a superb century by new Pakistani pro Raja Hamza Waheed.

The visitors racked up 233-7 from their 40 overs with overseas player Kagiso Rapuluna and new skipper Teddy Haffenden both making seventies, as Freddie Bose (3-38) and Waheed (2-44) shared five wickets.

Truro were in spot of bother at 99-4 with new skipper Adam Price out for 24.

However, number three Waheed found excellent support from wicket-keeper Wilf Bartlett (34) as they put on 109.

Waheed eventually departed for 104 (85 balls, 15 fours and two sixes), but Bartlett was joined by Ollie Taylor-Jones (16no) as they got home with eight balls to spare.

They will visit Paignton on May 10 after the Devonians won by four wickets at Callington.

Wadebridge are once again looking extremely strong and they eased to an eight-wicket win at Devon outfit Exmouth to set up a tie at Bridgwater on May 10.

After Callum Wilson struck early, home opener Noah Musikanth (61) struck a flurry of early boundaries as they reached 55-1.

But the introduction of left-arm seamer Elliot Dunnett (3-28 off 8) turned the tide as he took three quick wickets, and with skipper Fin Marks brilliantly run out by Matt Rowe, they slipped to 79-6 and eventually 111 all-out. Matt Lawrence took 2-10 towards the end.

Openers Matt Rowe (26) and Lachlan Crump (17) ensured there was no early wobble, and once they departed it was left to Matt Robins (30no) and James Turpin (22no) to see them over the line.
