ECB Cornwall Premier League round-up – Saturday, August 16

TRURO have to make up a 15-point deficit in the final two games following a 97-run defeat to Callington who are closing in on safety.

Cally knocked up a hefty 248-7 in their 50 overs led by Liam Lindsay’s 108.

The South African left-hander shared stands of 79 with Xavier Clarke (50) and 99 with James Brenton (29). Indian Akhilesh Sahani took 2-51 from his 10 overs.

Truro were steady at 76-2 with Scott Harvey 41 not out.

But once he went, wickets fell at regular intervals to be dismissed for 151. Ted Phillips hung around for 42 as spinners Max Tryfonos (4-22) and Graham Wagg (3-19) shared seven wickets.

St Just lost by nine runs at Werrington despite Neil Curnow’s superb 134.

Chasing 262, Curnow got some help from Jamie Semmens (20) and Chamikara Edirisinghe (34).

Curnow and the latter got the equation down to 39 from the final five overs, but once Adam Hodgson (3-50) bowled Edirisinghe and Curnow was lbw to Smeeth having struck 134 from 142 balls, St Just closed on 252-8.

Earlier, the hosts made 261-7 thanks to seventies from John Moon (75) and Adam Hodgson (76). Edirisinghe took 3-45 while Ben Stevens (0-21) was tidy.

Grampound Road saw off Helston by 63 runs, meaning they need a maximum of 15 points to survive.

The Roadies saw Dave Hoskings smash 57 from just 40 balls but the visitors fought back to make it 121-5.

But after Harry Matthews added 25, a vital stand of 52 between Antony Angove (53) and Jack Mingo got the Roadies up to 210-7 before they were dismissed for 231.

Spinners Brad Bury (2-20) and Harry Saunders (2-38) shared four wickets before Sunny Osmont (3-44) wrapped up the tail.

Helston captain Dan Jenkin (30) attacked from the off, but from 70-2 they found themselves 96-7 as spinner Alex Lean took 3-25.

Ollie Black (31no) and Ryan Tonkin (44) added 71, but once Tonkin was caught off Ravi Karunarathna (2-29), Nathan Keevil wrapped up the innings with the end coming at 168.

Penzance can win the title on Saturday after thrashing Redruth by 110 runs.

The hosts racked up a hefty 314-8 after 49.5 overs, helped by Jack Paull’s 104, when a Cornwall Air Ambulance emergency delayed the game for more than an hour.

It meant Redruth’s target was 257 from 36 overs and they were bundled out for just 146 all out.

Mehran Sanwal was the pick of the bowlers with 5-32.

Wadebridge cemented second with a six-run success over St Austell.

The Saints reduced the Swans to 58-4 through Adam Snowdon (2-35) and Liam Watson (2-25), but the hosts recovered to reach 222-7 courtesy of Matt Rowe (34), Jamie Beare (48), skipper Kelvin Snell (58) and Fred Wilkinson (25no). Gary Bone took 2-46.

St Austell lost Dan Jarman early, but Thevindu Dickwella and Mike Bone took the score to 119-1 in the 24thover before Bone (47) clipped Matt Lawrence (4-38) straight to Matt Robins.

From 158-2 the visitors lost four wickets for just six runs, and although Dickwella (109 off 95) went to a third hundred in four games, but was bowled with 183 on the board.

Soon after, Steve Raven was run-out for 23, but Charlie Ellis (2-38) trapped Liam Watson lbw to end a thriller.
