STITHIANS Seconds won a low-scoring thriller with Buckland Monachorum at Redruth to be crowned county champions on Saturday.

The village outfit dismissed the Devon-based side for just 69 as only Jim Maunder (13), Ben Berry (16) and James Blackmore (20) got started.

Opening bowlers Billy Holden (2-15) and Ryan Burley (3-15) shared five wickets, but it was Ben Tann’s 5-13 from seven overs that proved key as Buckland were dismissed within 31 overs.

A remarkable chase then ensued as Buckland opening bowlers Dan Rogers (2-22) and Alex Rich (6-29) ran wild as Stithians stumbled to 2-3, 17-5 and 31-7.

Tom Rodwell put on 13 with Harry Burley (16no) who then joined forces with skipper Tann (13no) to patiently knock off the last 26.

Mount Hawke and Porthtowan Seconds eased past their Saltash counterparts by 48 runs at Constantine.

Opener Mathew Thomas made a patient 38 before forties from Ryan Thomas (45) and Rob Brandreth (40) set the platform for skipper Rob Atkinson (22no) and wicketkeeper Will Hewitson (16no) to accelerate the total to 204-6 from their 40 overs.

In reply, the Ashes were going well at 99-2 with opener Ryan Bailey (55) and Alex Johnson (20) set, but once they fell within a run of each other (100-4), leg-spinner Ryan Thomas ran through the middle and lower order for figures of 5-40. Opening bowler Jacob Ireson claimed 3-28 from his 10 overs.

Devon-based Buckland Monachorum Seconds cruised to the Division Seven county title with a five-wicket victory over their Crofty/Holman counterparts at Penryn and St Gluvias.

Crofty slipped from 49-1 to 90 all out, nobody making more than Matt Sara’s 22, before a remarkable start saw Buckland falter to 22-4 against Alan Rule (4-28).

However, Gary Elkington’s unbeaten 45 ensured Buckland’s long trip was worth it.
