THE Cornwall Super 9s disability cricket team rounded off an unbeaten season by being crowned national champions on Sunday, August 23, at Kidderminster Cricket Club in Worcestershire.

Now in only their third season, the team, who are skippered by Josh Raven, have enjoyed a remarkable rise.

Last month, Cornwall defeated Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset to be crowned South West champions for the second consecutive year, and their success continued in the national competition, where they defeated the Isle of Wight in the last four to set up a showdown with Middlesex in the final. However, despite being the underdogs, Cornwall secured victory by an emphatic 97 runs having posted 176-8 from their 30 overs. Giles Francis led the way with 43 and 3-5, while Archie Ball also took two wickets as the players celebrated with the supporters.

Reflecting on the achievement, head coach Daniel Tonkin said: “The team have worked incredibly hard, and I am so proud of all they have achieved, especially in such a short space of time. I can’t wait for next season and to see what we can achieve.”

Players Henry Taylor and Max Jacka also had their say. Henry said: “It has been incredible. From a young age, I said my dream was to represent Cornwall, and it came true. Thank you to everyone who has made me feel so welcome at the start of my county career. Bring on next year!”, while Max added: “I couldn’t have put it better. It has been amazing to be part of this community and see everyone grow into champions. I’m very proud of the team.”
