HOLDERS Penzance can make Vinter Cup history tonight when they take on neighbours St Just in the 84th final at Camborne (6pm).
Brad Wadlan’s men start as heavy favourites despite missing three key players in wicket-keeper Nic Halstead-Cleak and fast bowlers Tommy Sturgess and Josh Croom who have all been left out having missed the semi-final victory over Truro.
But such is their strength in-depth they are able to include hard-hitting batsman Matt Stevens and spinners Charlie Hearn and Giles Lawrence.
St Just head up the A30 at full strength and will fancy their chances of an upset in a competition they won for nine straight years between 2004 and 2012 and three of the next four from 2014 to 2016.
But since then the St Clare outfit have been dominant themselves.
They have been in the last eight finals, winning the last seven, although their 2022 victory was later awarded to St Just by default.
The winners will take on Hawkey Cup champions Wadebridge in the WT Edwards Cup final at St Austell next Wednesday night (July 9) for the right to represent Cornwall in the national stages.
Looking ahead to this evening, Penzance skipper Brad Wadlan told the Voice: We’re really excited for tonight’s game against the old enemy, and Camborne always put on a great Vinter Cup final.
“We are full of confidence after an unbeaten June and tonight is the first of five big games in 10 days.
“We’ve decided to keep the side that got us through the quarter-final and semi-final, meaning Nic Halstead-Cleak, Tommy Sturgess and Josh Croom all miss out from tonight’s starting XI.”
