BRITANNIA INN HAWKEY CUP FINAL AT ST AUSTELL CC

Grampound Road 53 (11.2), Wadebridge 58-0 (7.2).

JAMES Turpin produced a superb individual performance as Wadebridge eased to a sixth Hawkey Cup title at Wheal Eliza on Wednesday night.

The former captain took 3-19 from his four overs as he and fellow opening bowler Callum Wilson (2-17 off 3) left the Roadies 36-5.

Aussie Lachlan Crump (4-9 off 2.2) then then ran through the lower order with the help of lef-armer Elliot Dunnett (1-6 off 2) as Grampound Road were dismissed for just 53.

The Swans were then home and hosed in just 44 deliveries as Turpin smacked 42 not out from 26 balls alongside ex-Cornwall captain Matt Robins (13no).

The Roadies are right in with a shout of survival in the ECB Cornwall Premier League after promotion, but in front of a huge crowd at their rivals, struggled after choosing to bat.

Victories at St Just and Helston in the league had been achieved by making first use of a surface, and on a grey, slightly damp, yet warm evening, Grampound started well as the hard-hitting Dave Hoskings ticked the first ball of the match down the vacant fine-leg region for four, before smoking the fifth through the covers for another boundary.

But off the final ball of the first over he could only guide Turpin straight to Dunnett at short third-man (8-1).

Grampound sent Sri Lankan pro Ravi Karunarathna up the order in a bid to attack the powerplay, but after Antony Angove got Wilson away to the fence, Karunrathna departed off the final ball of the over for a second ball duck as he edged behind to Fred Wilkinson.

Two balls later it was 14-3 when Angove played around a Turpin full toss, and when Jack Mingo top-edged a pull shot off Wilson to be well-taken by Matt Lawrence, it was 15-4 after just four overs.

The fifth over produced just two, and Wilson was left frustrated in the sixth as new man Alex Lean was dropped by Lawrence diving away to his left at square-leg as it went to the fence, before an edge also went for four.

Turpin’s superb evening continued in his last as he caught and bowled Lean.

Crump’s seamers were introduced after seven overs and he wasted no time in having Chris Roberts (4) caught by Dunnett at fine-leg.

Skipper Tom Orpe (16 off 21) stood firm at the other end and got a couple of nice boundaries away, but a wicket fell in every Crump over.

Kelvin Snell.

He first bowled wicket-keeper Chris Willett who stood in for the unavailable Harry Gregory, while the 12th over after Dunnett had caught and bowled Dan Ferris, saw Orpe caught at long-on by skipper Kelvin Snell and last man Tom Fox-Dean bowled first ball.

Opening bowlers Angove and Nathan Keevil caused some problems, including Turpin being dropped in the covers by a diving Orpe, but while Robins played the support role and later struck Karunarathna over the top for six, Turpin was brutal, capitalising on anything overpitched or wide to hit down the ground or through the off-side.

Turpin sealed victory by hitting Fox-Dean over long-on for six as the Swans set up a WT Edwards Cup final with Penzance or St Just at the same venue on Wednesday, July 9 (6pm).
