ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY)

Penzance 212-8 (50), Truro 168 (46.3).

TRURO remain bottom of the table despite a spirited performance against champions Penzance who eventually ran out 44-run winners at Boscawen Park.

Penzance chose to bat and saw openers Christian Purchase (8) and Jack Paull add 34 before the former was caught behind off Indian pro Akhilesh Sahani (3-41).

Paull made his was to 30 before wicket-keeper Wilf Bartlett took a second catch off Freddie Bose, and with Truro applying the pressure, Bose (2-26) took out Nic Halstead-Cleak and the miserly Rob Harrison (1-28 off 10) bowled Charlie Sharland (64-4).

But Penzance skipper Brad Wadlan stayed calm and alongside Grant Stone they put on 112.

Wadlan eventually departed lbw to Adam Price having made 68 from 99 balls, while the hosts grabbed some late points as wickets tumbled, including Stone (44) who was bowled by Jack Ivamy.

Truro were right in the game at 80-1 in the 24th over with Harry Phillips (43 off 106) and Sahani (30 off 35) going well, but once Sahani was lbw to Josh Croom, Penzance’s bowlers proved too good.

Four wickets wickets for just six runs (111-6) as Ted Phillips and Adam Price were both lbw to Pakistani pro Mehran Sanwal and Tom Dinnis respectively.

The left-arm spin of Charlie Hearn (3-30) bowled Phillips after his long vigil, and when Bartlett was bowled for an eight-ball duck, Truro required 102 with just 85 balls remaining.

Murray Wyatt was back in the team and alongside the dangerous Scott Kellow, added 34 before the latter departed for 16 off 12 balls as he picked out Paull off Sanwal (2-31).

Wyatt got some boundaries away, but Wadlan’s (2-27) left-arm spin took out Harrison and Bose in successive balls, before Dinnis (2-38) ended the game by bowling Ivamy. Wyatt was 37 not out.
