This period home for sale is “one of Truro’s finest” and has belonged to everyone from war heroes to MPs.

Comprigney House, in Truro, is believed to date back to the 16th century at its oldest parts, when it belonged to the 24-acre estate of the Duke of Arundell.

In 1718 Comprigney House was the birthplace of “notable theologian” Reverend Thomas Vivian, whose son John Vivian is sometimes referred to as the founder of the copper trade in Cornwall.

John’s son, Sir Richard Hussey Vivian, was a soldier who fought at Waterloo, and who was a two-time MP for Truro.

Over the years, the property passed down to his heirs, later being owned by churchwarden William Nicholas Gill.

Eventually, Comprigney House passed into the ownership of Lieutenant-Colonel Evelyn Edmonds Mulock, sailed around the world three times and fought in the First World War, later being titled the Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall.

The large kitchen and breakfast room contains a four-oven AGA cooker, and off the back hall is a laundry/utility room.

Sean Anderson is marketing the property for Savills Cornwall and comments: “A handsome and imposing residence, Comprigney House is everything you would expect in a country house but situated within the heart of Truro.

“Once home to the Duke of Arundell, this is its first time on the market for more than four decades, and an exciting opportunity to acquire one of the city’s finest houses and to join the ranks of an impressive list of former owners.”
