CONSTRUCTION students have been helped build a career for themselves after visiting a Newquay housing development scheme.

Thirty five first year construction students from the University of Plymouth experienced a live construction site and key building methods in practice from Cornish developer Treveth at Hedhas Dowr.

They were able to observe building techniques currently being used at Hedhas Dowr, gain insight into the day-to-day coordination of a development project, and ask questions about the challenges and opportunities involved in modern construction.

The undergraduates were welcomed by members of the project team, including representatives from Poltair Construction, the site’s contractor, and Kendall Kingscott, acting as employer’s agent.

Their expertise and willingness to share knowledge gave students a valuable, well-rounded understanding of how different disciplines collaborate to deliver a successful scheme.

The site visit formed part of the B Corp developer’s ongoing commitment to supporting education and skills development within the construction industry.

Treveth aims to help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world delivery by opening its sites to students.

Dominic O’Neill, development director at Treveth, said: “Opening our sites to students is an important part of how we support the future of the construction industry.

“Seeing a live development in progress helps bring academic learning to life, and we’re proud to play a role in giving students practical insight into how projects are delivered on the ground.

“Visits like this also highlight the collaboration and care that goes into our developments, and we’re always pleased to share that experience with the next generation of professionals.

“We hope the students found the site visit valuable to their studies and that it has triggered some thoughts regarding future career paths. Treveth would like to thank everyone involved in making the visit an engaging experience and wishes the students every success as they continue their studies.”

Andy Ley, Managing Director at Poltair Construction, added: “At Poltair Construction, we’re passionate about opening our doors to the next generation. Inviting students onto live construction sites gives them a genuine insight into the scale, variety, and excitement of our industry.

“There’s no substitute for experiencing real projects and the real challenges first-hand. We want young people to see that construction offers far more than they might imagine, from technical innovation, project management to skilled trades. By showcasing these opportunities early, we hope to inspire future talent and demonstrate just how rewarding a career in construction can be.”
