ONE of the reasons I stood for election is because I have such admiration for the people who make South East Cornwall the place it is. From nurses, teachers and builders to volunteers, community groups and local businesses, people across our area give their time and energy to support others an make our communities stronger.

That’s why I want to celebrate some of these brilliant people and organisations doing that work every day.

Did you know that Liskeard and Looe Foodbank has helped more than 1,000 people across our area with essential food and toiletry supplies so far this year? It takes an incredible team of volunteers to ensure that these efforts go smoothly when someone is in a time of need.

I was glad to put on an apron and roll up my sleeves recently to help the team with some of the work that they do. We also discussed the challenges they face, from food quality to practical issues such as volunteer parking. It was a privilege to meet the volunteers and hear about the difference they are making. I'll be following up on those concerns so they can continue supporting local people.

Another wonderful group of people are those who help at the Zone in Downderry. Turning an old Methodist Church into a beloved community space is no mean feat, but the community group have certainly achieved their goals. I had the pleasure of visiting them recently to speak about how they have got to this stage, the impact of this Labour Government’s investment in the centre, and the work that they are now doing to support around 700 permanent residents. I wish them all the best for the future and will continue working with them as the space goes from strength to strength.

Our communities are also finding new ways to make sure everyone can feel part of the places where they live. I recently visited Torpoint Library, where I heard more about the Town Council’s inclusive sticker scheme, which businesses display in their windows to reassure people that they will feel safe and understood when shopping or meeting friends for a coffee. I was really pleased to hear more about this scheme and will continue to work with local organisations as well as Town and Parish Councils so that our communities can continue to be great spaces for all of us.

So, that’s just a few examples of the countless bits of community work that are happening all around us in South East Cornwall. Some of it may be happening in plain sight but requires an immense amount of effort to get done. I’d like to thank everyone in our area who plays their part day after day to champion South East Cornwall and support the people who live in our special corner of Cornwall. I’ll continue to raise the profile of the people and organisations who are making our area that bit better one step at a time.
