OUR tour of exploration sees us afloat today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our journeying in Cornwall has taken us all round the magnificient coast of the county and has followed the inland boundary with Devon along the beautiful Tamar Valley.

“Today we are afloat, using one of the few chain ferry services in the country. The busy Torpoint Ferry service, which has three ferries in total, runs across the River Tamar between Plymouth and Torpoint.”

The town of Torpoint in South East Cornwall sits on the western shore of the busy River Tamar.

Across the water is the huge Devonport Dockyard where warships and submarines are maintained and refitted.

You can sit beside the river and watch all the activity on the Hamoaze, the name for the stretch of water off the dockyard, and, as mentioned, you can get afloat, as a passenger on one of the ferries, to enjoy a closer look at the action and the dockyard. Sometimes the ferries stop to let a ship pass!

To the south of Torpoint is the large tidal inlet of St John’s Lake which is a popular spot for birdwatching and also a favoured location for watersports enthusiasts, particularly windsurfers. Further to the south, the village of Millbrook sits in a scenic waterside position.

Next time we will be at Antony House, near Torpoint, which is open to the public through the National Trust.
