THE sandy expanses of Widemouth Bay feature today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.
Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Travelling north east from Crackington Haven on the North Cornwall coast, we pass through the Poundstock area where one of my grandmothers came from. She had numerous sisters and most of them went on to have children – and my mother would recount how she had a large number of cousins.
“Some of the relatives, in their leisuretime, would head to Widemouth (pronounced ‘Widmouth’) Bay, around three miles south of Bude.”
The beach faces due west, making it a great place on a summer’s evening to watch the sun go down over a shimmering sea.
When conditions are right, you can walk along the shore as a glorious orange-red sun gradually disappears below the horizon, while some people may still be surfing, making the most of the last rays of the day.

The beach is enormous, with wide expanses of sand and also some rocky areas - there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide.
Being so wide open, it can get windy here, so it’s worth taking a windbreak or a sturdy beach tent. And care needs to be taken in the sea, as on most of the North Cornwall coast, because of rip currents.
Next time, we will be visiting Bude, the main holiday resort in the north eastern corner of Cornwall, not far from the border with Devon.

Our lovely tour around the county of Cornwall, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, magnificent moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
