TREYARNON Bay features today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.
Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Having previously visited the south and west of the county, we are now following the extensive northern coast of Cornwall.
‘This coast has plenty to offer visitors with resorts including Newquay and Perranporth, both known for their surfing. Away from the towns, there is also much to enjoy with tremendous rural beaches and amazing coastal scenery including the spectacular Bedruthan Steps.”
Treyarnon Bay (a favourite of favourites with the author over the decades) is on the north coast, a few miles to the west of Padstow. The sandy beach, which is popular with families, is reached by narrow and winding lanes.
The beach is backed by sand dunes and is a good place for surfing and bodyboarding. When the tide is out, there’s also a seawater swimming pool in the rocks.
At the mouth of the cove is the grass-topped Trethias Island which is separated from the mainland by a deep gulley. The sea crashes into this dramatic ravine in stormy weather.
The cliff path to the south takes you past secluded coves towards the sandy inlet of Porthcothan beach. Meanwhile, the path to the north provides an easy stroll around to Constantine Bay. Offshore are two distinct rocks known as the Quies.

Next time, we will visit Constantine Bay, known for the good waves it produces for surfers, and Trevose Head, with its sheer, gigantic cliffs.
Our lovely tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from sandy beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
