OUR tour of discovery sees us in the grounds of a fine country house today as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.
Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our journeying in Cornwall has taken us all round the stunning coast of the county and has followed the inland boundary with Devon along the terrific Tamar Valley.
“Now, having left the town of Torpoint and its busy ferries, we are heading west again as we visit further locations in the county.
“Today we enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of a country house set above one of Cornwall’s wide tidal creeks.”

A relatively small number of wealthy families played the leading roles in the life of Cornwall across the centuries.
One of those families was the Carew-Poles of Antony House, near Torpoint in South East Cornwall.
Today, the house is run by the National Trust but members of the family still live in the property. Grand portraits of family members from different eras adorn walls in the house, reflecting how fashions and attitudes changed over the years.
The estate has lovely gardens with topiary and sculptures, and sweeping views towards the beautiful Lynher estuary.
The gardens featured in scenes from the 2010 film, Alice in Wonderland, which starred Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Next time we will be in the South East Cornwall village of St Germans where the parish church is one of the most historic in Cornwall.
Our lovely tour around the county, taking in well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from brilliant beaches, wild moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to welcoming towns, pretty villages, mining heritage sites and visitor attractions.
