WORK is underway to upgrade gas pipes around Newquay Zoo.
Wales and West Utilities is carrying out the upgrade as part of work that started at the end of March and will be ongoing until February next year.
The work has been planned in conjunction with Cornwall Council, and it has been agreed that during the project traffic management will be in place, which includes motorists using give and take on Billings Drive, Clemens Close, Carter Close, Bedowan Meadows, where required throughout the project.
Rolling multi-way traffic lights will be in place on Towan Blystra Road between May 18 and December 8, Tretherras Road from June 29 to August 17, Dukes Way between September 7 and October 23, as well as Trerice Drive from November 9 to February 16, 2027.
The project is part of Wales and West Utilities work to invest over £3.2-million over the next two years to upgrade gas pipes across Newquay.
The intensive programme of wider mains replacement works will see over 25 kilometres of gas pipes upgraded across the area.
Natalie Raphael from Wales and West Utilities said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing and ensure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
