MEMBERS of Truro-Morlaix Twinning Association (TMTA) recently welcomed a group of 19 visitors from the city’s twin town in the French region of Brittany.
Accommodated by local hosts, the Gallic guests were treated to a full programme of activities including a tour of Pendennis Castle at Falmouth, a bring-and-share meal at Mylor Bridge with entertainment from the Truro Troubadours, a trip to the Flicka Donkey Sanctuary at Mabe and dinner at Truro Golf Club.
The group was welcomed to the city by Truro’s town crier and his consort, Lionel and Carol Knight, before being led to the offices of Truro City Council for a reception hosted by mayor and mayoress Cllr Chris Wells and Nicola Carveth. Attendees visited the Mayor’s Parlour to admire artifacts including the key to the city, and a window display was prepared in their honour by the Tourist Information Centre in Boscawen Street.
TMTA chair Rachel Killick said: “We had a wonderful weekend of companionship and enjoyment with twinning friends old and new, refreshing and sustaining the strong bonds of affection and mutual understanding shared over many years by Truro and Morlaix.”
Truro and Morlaix have been twinned since 1979. Morlaix Avenue in Truro was officially inaugurated in May 1983; Avenue de Truro in Morlaix was inaugurated the following year.
Truro-Morlaix Twinning Association is active all year round with social activities in the city (including regular boules matches in Boscawen Park) as well as regular visits to and from Morlaix.
The group recently launched a prize for outstanding progress in French for young people in local educational establishments; a student at Truro College received a prize earlier this year, and a similar accolade is about to be bestowed upon a Truro School pupil.
