A SURVEY to determine whether parking for local residents could be introduced in Newquay has been inconclusive.

Cornwall Council carried out an online survey to look at the possibility of introducing a “comprehensive, fair, and locally minded residents' parking scheme” in key areas, which encompasses hotspots whilst also preventing impacts being felt in other areas but received a “disappointing” lack of engagement.

Cornwall Council is now due to stage a “more targeted” parking consultation ahead of making any decision on implementing potential schemes.

Newquay MP Noah Law and Newquay Cornwall councillors, including Mayor Cllr Drew Creek, put pressure on the authority to stage a survey as they believe it is important for resident’s views to be heard.

The Residents Parking for Newquay Group argues resident parking zones would free up spaces for people who live in the area and stop shoppers, workers and surfers from taking up all the spaces.

Newquay central Cornwall councillor Joanna Kenny, who was given a presentation on the parking survey findings, said: “There was a somewhat disappointing lack of engagement.

“There was very little takeout, which is exactly the problem. When we tried to do this consultation years ago, we just couldn't get enough people to show an interest in what we were trying to do.

“The exception was from one area at Island Crescent, which has been campaigning for a road-specific solution for years. Twenty-five per cent of responses came from that area.

“There is some disagreement between us about whether we should just do a localised scheme similar to Ennors Road or across Newquay scheme.

“The end result is that there will be a more targeted survey in September. My understanding was there will be leaflets that we were going to distribute ourselves. But sadly, there are, no changes in the coming season.”
