THE Diocese of Truro has not ruled out saving St Paul’s Church if a solution to its structural defects can be found.
Church Commissioners have approved the demolition of the Grade II listed building, but in a letter delivered to the church’s neighbours in Agar Road, Tregolls Road and Alverton Lane, diocesan secretary Rev Canon Simon Cade said questions had been asked as to whether the building might be saved in the light of further offers being made for it.
“In theory, if someone came forward now with a credible plan that could ‘solve’ the technical and structural problems with the building, then we could go back to the Commissioners and ask to delay or change their decision,” he said.
“We don't think that is likely, as we have been seeking solutions including new owners for 18 years, but even at this late stage we can consider it.”
But he warned the diocese was “wary”, having received proposals before. “When the professional surveys have taken place, they have proven that the stonework cannot be repaired. We want to avoid another long period of uncertainty as the building continues to deteriorate.”
In his letter, Rev Cade admitted: “I know that we have not been the best neighbour while the future of the building has been uncertain.” To move ahead with demolition, the diocese will need to decide what the site is to be used for, and he invited opinions.
“We are at the very early stages of working out the next steps,” he said, adding: “Demolition is still months away, not weeks away.”
Vanessa Tyler made a proposal to church commissioners on behalf of a Plymouth-based charity and a private investor to restore and convert the church into a community venue capable of hosting concerts and heritage skills workshops. The offer made was increased upon hearing of the commissioners’ decision to approve demolition on September 9.
“Our proposal offers a financially viable, socially responsive and sustainable alternative to demolition,” she said. “With the right support and vision, St Paul’s can once again become a place of gathering, growth and inspiration - a true beacon of resilience and creativity in the heart of Truro.”
