THE SUN shone and the crowds turned out for Trevithick Day on Saturday (April 25). The event celebrates Richard Trevithick, inventor of the world’s first steam-powered locomotive. Its inaugural drive up Camborne Hill on Christmas Eve, 1801, has been immortalised in song.
Steam engines travelled from around Cornwall and beyond to take part in the 3pm parade. There was a programme of music and dance including a show from Kernow Pipes and Drums, and a model display in the church of St Martin and St Meriadoc. Those who parked at Tesco Camborne raised £601 for West Cornwall Search and Rescue.
The Trevithick Day CIC was awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in November, in recognition of the work it does to keep the tradition alive year after year.
