Cornish developer Treveth has confirmed acquisition of land at Penwinnick Road in St Austell.
The parcel of land consists principally of two empty and obsolete council offices, together with the grade II listed Pondhu House and Stables.
Cornwall Council has been successful in securing Homes England brownfield grant funding to safely demolish and remediate the site, with Treveth managing the process in liaison with its neighbours.
A company spokesperson said a public and local stakeholder consultation process would start shortly in a bid to inform the future of this mixed-use development, including a masterplan that fully considers the existing occupants and neighbours.
“Treveth are very pleased to confirm acquisition of land at Penwinnick Road. This attractive site includes numerous mature trees and heritage features which should ensure any future development proposals are desirable and distinctive, appropriate given the sites prominent location close to the centre of the town.
“The adjacent Pondhu School, St Austell Town Council offices and Cornwall Council Children’s Centre all remain accessible and open as usual.”
The spokesperson added: “Treveth operates under a ‘Profit with Purpose’ ethos, ensuring that residential property is offered to people who live, work or have a family connection within the immediate vicinity of each new build home scheme.
“This discourages second homeownership and, coupled with our three-year leases as standard, provides the security and stability families need to put down roots in their own communities.”
As St Austell Town Council’s new landlord, Treveth has confirmed that it can remain at the Stable Block at Penwinnick Road for the time being and will enter into negotiations closer to 2025 when the existing lease expires.
Treveth’s commercial portfolio spans industrial development, urban regeneration and mixed-use development schemes including the £160m Pydar regeneration project and Langarth Garden Village.
•St Austell Town Council is not moving to White River Place following the handover of the Penwinnick Road site to Treveth as previously reported.
