THERE were lots of thrills and spills during motorsport action staged at Watergate Bay over the weekend.
The Watergate Bay Sprint experienced medical interventions, multiple crashes during the event held along a 900-metre stretch of the B3276 during torrential downpours in between dry spells.
Motorsport fans watched competitors race in cars including a Peugeot 205GTi, a Ford Escort Mk2, an Audi S4, a BMW M240i and a Rover Mini at speeds in excess of 90mph.
They competed in various categories including EVs, a junior section, modified cars specialist production, rally cars, historically interesting cars and road cars specialist production.
Steve Furzeland driving a Subaru Impreza clocked the fastest time on both days, which included a time of 28.65 seconds.

Cornwall Council approved a road closure for the Watergate Bay Sprint event to take place. Money raised is being donated to Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Adrian Elliott, the chairman of Watergate Bay Motorsport Ltd, said: “The conditions on Saturday were just about as bad as they can get with torrential rain and strong winds.
“Practice was delayed but got underway around 9.30am. Several cars had minor offs, but nothing extreme. It soon became apparent that Steve Furzeland in his ex-works Subaru Impreza and Alan Goodair in his Mitsubishi Evo IV were going to take some beating. When racing ceased it was Steve Furzeland in his Subaru that took the fastest time of the day. The spirit of the meeting award was awarded collectively to all the marshals for standing post all day in torrential rain.
“Sunday saw the day dawn dry. Practice was underway on time at 9am and times were improving from Saturday. A shower before lunch brought the times back down a bit and saw a few little incidents. After lunch the track had dried, the sun was out and it was game on.
“Unfortunately, Alan Goodair blew up the rear differential on his Mitsubishi, putting him out.
“The speed trap was seeing speeds in excess of 90mph. Andy Slade in the immaculately turned out Metro 6R4, Matt Keane in his BMW, Andy Williams in his Westfield and Steve Furzeland in the Subaru trading times. Steve came out the victor once again taking the fastest time of the day. Spirit of the Meeting award went to event secretary Manda Moo.
“We would like to say a massive thank you to Peter Cowling for the use of his field as the paddock, to all our sponsors and supporters, including WAX Newquay, MY Motors Redruth, Cowling Plant Hire.
“Carbon Offset Cornwall once again came on board to make this a green event, and we were once again one of the only events in the UK to offer a class for EV's. For the first time this year we had a class for juniors with under 17's in unmodified road going cars up to 1400cc. A special mention for Charlie Frost who won the junior class in his Suzuki Swift “Finally, a massive thank you to all the motor sport fans who turned out to watch in very challenging conditions at times.”
