STUDENTS in Newquay have put their engineering skills to the test at a national competition.
Treviglas Academy took part in the Greenpower Challenge for the first time, which encourages young people to design, build and race electric-powered go-karts,
Eight students travelled to Predannack Airfield near Helston to compete in a full day of racing, teamwork and problem-solving.
The team finished 17th out of 26 teams and 13th out of all kit cars in the academy. The team also completed the endurance race without any mechanical issues, a “feat that can trip up even experienced teams.”
Treviglas reached out to Wain Homes for help, in preparation for the long and sunny day ahead. The company donated a pit lane gazebo, providing much-needed shelter from the heat and supplied breakfast and refreshments to keep students energised throughout the day.
Charlotte Pollard, Treviglas Academy teacher and team lead, said: “This was our first time entering the Greenpower Challenge, and our Treviglas students were full of enthusiasm and motivation throughout the day.
“The support from Wain Homes was fantastic and made a real difference. With a 7.30am start and a finish in the late afternoon, the gazebo they provided gave us a much-needed shaded space to work on the car and take breaks. The breakfast they supplied was also a huge morale boost for the team.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Wain Homes for their partnership and generosity. Their support helped turn our first Greenpower experience into a successful and memorable one.”
Suzie Wakefield from Wain Homes South West, said: “We are so proud of how well the team did, especially as this was the first time they have participated in this competition, and we were pleased to have helped a school local to one of our popular developments.”
