A COMPETITION with pupils at St Erme with Trispen Community Primary School has led to the official naming of a new 80-home development due to be built in the village.
The name ‘The Paddocks’ was selected from dozens of imaginative suggestions submitted by schoolchildren.
Joint first place was awarded to sisters from the primary school, whose entries – St Erme Paddocks and Eglos Erme Paddocks – inspired the final name chosen by Newquay housebuilder Legacy Properties, who felt the name captured the rural setting and longstanding agricultural character of the area.
Second place went to Alfred Hunter, whose suggestion ‘Boswiddle’ will be used for the new Plen-an-Gwari – the traditional Cornish “playing place” - within the development’s public open space. Legacy also plans to incorporate several additional pupil submissions as street names, which will be put forward to the local council for approval as part of the development process.
Each winner was presented with a certificate and voucher, with every pupil who took part receiving celebratory sweets.
Mark Docherty, head of sales at Legacy Properties, said: “It was brilliant to see how much thought the children put into naming the new community. The Paddocks feels absolutely right for Trispen, and it was important to us that the name came from the young people who live here.”
Jamie Cameron, assistant headteacher at St Erme with Trispen Community Primary School, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed being involved and took real pride in creating names that reflect their village and family heritage. We’re very grateful to Legacy Properties for engaging with the school and for giving the pupils such a positive and memorable experience.”
The Paddocks received full planning permission earlier in 2025. Construction is due to begin early next year, with the first homes available in the summer/autumn of 2026.
