AROUND 150 people gathered at Gwennap Pit, near Redruth, on the afternoon of Pentecost for an ecumenical service organised by Churches Together in Cornwall.
Pastor Jenny Lockwood, co-ordinator at Gwennap Pit, gave a welcome. There were people from all over Cornwall in the congregation as well as visitors from further afield including Wellington in Somerset.
The call to worship was delivered by the Rev David Downing, moderator of the South Western Synod of the United Reformed Church, and Orianna, a Truro Cathedral girl chorister, contributed an introit.
The hymns were accompanied by musicians from Truro School: director of music, Richard Osmand and Truro School Music Ensemble - Noah, Trystan, Kes and Jenny.
Opening prayers were led by Father Paul Andrew, a retired Roman Catholic clergyman. The Rev Helen Byrne, chaplain of Truro School, read from the book of Ezekiel and Jenny Lockwood from the Gospel of John.
Geoff Watson, a Quaker, read from Acts. The sermon was delivered by the Rev Dr Dan Haylett, chair of the South West Peninsula Methodist District, who also gave the blessing.
Those taking part enjoyed a cream tea in the Gwennap Pit visitor centre following the service.
Gwennap is famous for its association with the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, who preached there on 18 occasions.
