PERSONNEL at RAF St Mawgan have been firing rockets to help schoolchildren reach new heights.

The airbase supported a science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) experience day at Chacewater School where a high-flying rocket experiment was among the highlights of the day.

More than 200 students from reception to year six across four sessions were immersed in hands-on STEM activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire future innovators.

Squadron Leader Leroy Hall led the charge, guiding students through the principles of aerodynamics and propulsion. But the wind had its own lesson to teach; several rockets soared impressively skyward, with a few landing on the school roof, prompting a good-natured apology to the school caretaker.

Squadron Leader Hall said: “This kind of engagement is vital” said. “It’s not just about science; it’s about showing young minds what’s possible when you combine imagination with engineering.”

A spokesperson for RAF St Mawgan added: “The event ran all day and was part of RAF St Mawgan’s ongoing commitment to youth outreach and education. With laughter, learning and a few airborne surprises, the day proved to be a resounding success.”
